ArcGIS Connection - does not list data in geodatabase (problem with schema info)

I have an ArcGIS geodatabase on oracle. When trying to connect using ArcGIS Connection > ArcSDE Enterprise, I can connect to the database, but when the data connections window should list features, I get an error 'There was a problem accessing this connection's schema information'.

I thought I would test with an SQLEXPRESS sqlserver database. I set that up and testing went well for a few days. I could edit features from both Arc/Map3d with various users. Then, I started getting the same error about not being able to get schema information. It doesn't matter which user I try to connect with.

I set up an new database on the same SQLEXPRESS server. So far this one is working as expected.

Does anyone have experience connecting from Map3D to ESRI geodatabase servers that could give me ideas to troubleshoot this issue? Even just a list of components for a known working setup map3d > esri geodatabase would be helpful!

I'm currently testing with map3d 2021

Not a solution but a work around: From ArcGIS desktop or ArcPro, whichever you prefer, use the catalog and pull the feature class out of the gdb. Then in M3D, bring in the feature class as a shapefile.

Thanks, but I need users from both autodesk and esri worlds editing the same data in the same geodatabase (which is the same data behind map services used by our web maps). We also do our very best to avoid shapefiles around here. 😃
