System running out of memory error

System: win7 32bit 4GB ram 2.9 usable. Diskspace 270GB free. Swap 8GB.

I get a system out of memory error when opening a 74.4MB file. Then the CAD closes. Is there some settings I can change on the system or have I reached my systems ability to handle such a file.

As long as we don't know what is in that file we can't say what to do to get it working with 32bit operating system.

But always worth to try is to run _PURGE and clean up all unused definitions, or run command _WBLOCK with manually selected entities in modelspace to create a new drawing from that.

If you upload the file please let us also know the version of Map3D you are using.

I would strongly recommend to upgrade to a 64bit operating system + 64bit Map3D.
