XRef not maintaining changes in host drawing.

I am having an issue with a file that contains multiple XRefs.  The scenario is as follows:

I have a "Master" drawing that I use as a template.  It contains all of my blocks, sheets, viewports, etc.  I attach a drawing via XRef, add my blocks as needed, publish, submit.

For the last three days, I have been working with an XRef file that will not maintain ANY changes.  If I turn off a layer, save the file, reopen, or reload, the layers are back on, lineweights are different, colors revert, etc.  However, if I open the file separate - not attached to my template, it appears the way I want.

I have visretain set to 0, visretainmode set to 2047, xrefoverride set to 0.  Also, setbylayer has no effect.

I have run Audit, and recover and no errors are returned.

What am I doing wrong?  I am at my wits end.

Screenshots attached for reference.

VISRETAIN set to 0 in the topmost file means the XREF(s) layer settings rule 100% of the time, not whatever you do in that top file.

Sounds like you really don't want that, you want the opposite.

VISRETAIN setting in the XREFs themselves mean nothing.

@pendean - Thanks.  Ended up there were some (apparently) hidden files in some of the blocks that somehow did not have my settings applied.  I had to open and edit the blocks to get every thing to work.
