In previous versions of AutoCAD, I could search my drawing file by using an Asterick as a wild card. For example dwg#z101213 Sprocket, Triple, Line 5, if I couldn't remember the exact name, I could type *triple* and all my drawings with the word triple would show up. Now I am running AutoCAD LT 17 and it tells me that "character cannot be used in a file name". Am I missing something, surely there is a way to find a drawing without knowing it's exact name, I have more that a thousand drawings...

On my server, in a folder, I have several different folders for different customers so I would use the open command, go to the certain folder and type the certain descriptive word with an * before and after the word.
Can confirm, works okay in 2014, but not 2017.
Looks like you'll have to do your wildcarding in Windows Explorer first.

Thanks, at least I know I am not crazy... well a little crazy, didn't think about using explorer, even though I use it for other files... So I appreciate your time in enlightening me on this topic.

It works in AutoCAD 2018.
However, it doesn't work if you use the wildcard in a folder on the network location. But it works on a local drive.
Are you also see this problem on a local drive? I don't think Autodesk changed anything. The dialog box is a standard Windows component.
I just test it on a mapped drive, it works. I guess it doesn't work if the path uses UNC path. But if you change it to a mapped drive, it works.
The behavior is the same in AutoCAD 2017 and 2018.
Your only option is by mapping a network drive. You can change \\servername\data to F: or Z:
The wildcard works that way.
