Tool Palette - Entering object onto its own layer

Hi guys,

I have recently started using tool palette to make my life easier, I have created a bunch of symbols that I use daily and added them into my tool palette. When I created each symbol I have added it to it's own individual layer.

When I use the tool palette to add a symbol to a new drawing it adds it to the current layer. Is there a way to have it enter on its own layer that it was created on?   So when I add my 10 symbols quickly to my drawing they are all on their own individual layers?

Thanks!

Explain how you did that exactly?

Sounds like a step got missed in the TP setup (right-click on a block of yours in TP, select PROPERTIES and see for yourself what layer it's going to plant itself on).
OR... Do you need to just EXPLODE the block for it to be on the correct layer? Goes back to my first question above.

I created my symbol on layer ( Smoke Detector ) then created a block called smoke detector and saved the file.

Sounds like a step got missed in the TP setup (right-click on a block of yours in TP, select PROPERTIES and see for yourself what layer it's going to plant itself on).

When I explode the block in the new drawing it then is on the correct layer. How can I make it so I don't have to explode the block each time to get it on it's original layer?

That's it then, you have a block within a block.

Right-click on the block in TP, select PROPERTIES, at the EXPLODE entry, select YES.
Not test it: drag and drop it: does it auto-explode and show up on the correct layer as you wish it to be?

Yes it does. Now it is on the correct layer - however it is now exploded into individual lines.  Is there any way to drop it from the TP still in block form, but on the layer it was created on?

Yes there is.

You only have to Step 1 once.

STEP 1 Make sure you have a drawing open which has all the correct layers in with the correct colours, linetypes and anything else you need.

Now open up your tool palette. Right click on one of your symbols. Choose PROPERTIES. Find the GENERAL section. Change the LAYER to what you want and that's it.

I'd save your workspace just to be on the safe side.

If you want to check it worked. Open up one of the default AutoCAD templates and drag and drop your symbol into it. You will see your symbol on the correct layer and if you go into the layer manager you will see the layer set up how you want.
