Snaps to objects and grid

I've been using AutoCAD LT for a while and am currently using version 2019.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I find it extremely alloying when I am adding lines or moving objects that if I have grid snap and object snaps on, the object snaps seem to have priority over the grid snap.  So when I think I am going to snap to a grid location the object will jump to an object snap sometimes very far away. Yes if I am paying attention, I can see the green preview snap position.

So to go back & forth between grid and object snap I try to use the F3 and F9 keys which are inconveniently located far apart on the keyboard, but I don't always know what mode I'm in.

I think it would be far better to to snap to the closest location to the cursor whether it is a grid or an object snap location.

Remap your F-keys if needed: CUI command is the place.

Otherwise... Get in the habit of tapping F3 and F9 when you need/don't need each: with repetition and practice it will become second nature.

Can you use object snap overrides instead of running object snaps? Running object snaps have a disadvantage compared to object snap overrides, and that is a missed pick with running object snaps will still acquire a point, and it will be wrong. With object snap overrides, a missed pick will not acquire a point and prompt you to pick again.

Hi John,

Thank you for your message. I do appreciate the responses I received on this, but I feel AutoCAD LT is severely lacking for productivity of drawing wiring diagrams and other electrical type of work. I use free software that is vastly superior for line (wire) creation and edit ability.

As I mentioned in my post I would like to be able to snap to closest to cursor either grid or running object snap. Not have the object snap take priority over grid snap. Ideally have an option for both if some people would like it the way it is.

The next step would be to be able to edit lines as though they are connected.

The final step would be to be able to keep lines connected to an object so that the object can be moved and the connecting lines go with it.

If any of these three functions exist in AutoCAD LT now please let me know.

I will probably use the free software I have to create all drawings and just export into AutoCAD LT. Check out DesignSpark Electrical.

IF you want to automate electrical design in CAD, you need to use the correct versions of AutoCAD, not LT which is a low-cost-low-ability generic general use drafting tool not aimed at any one industry like it always has been for 25+years now . It's called AutoCAD ELECTRICAL https://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad/included-toolsets/autocad-electrical

I don't think AUTOCAD MEP does what you want, but it might if you want to find out there too https://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad/included-toolsets/autocad-mep

Correct CADtools for the correct job my friend, that is what it is all about these days.
