Lasso Selection suddenly not a rectangle

In Acad 2020, suddenly lasso selection doesn't drag in a rectangular window the way it used to, but goes into a freehand sort of drawn line. It doesn't matter from which direction I drag (top to bottom, right to left or the opposite). And I can find no preference for it in the main Preferences dialogue box under "Selection". Any suggestions for returning to the ordinary rectangular window selection? Thx.

Lasso is not rectangular.

Type in PICKAUTO - set it to a value of one (1).

@bmallc  - I told you the most direct route (changing a system variable). You can also change this in OPTIONS > SELECTION tab.

Help is your friend when it comes to system variables. >> PICKAUTO

Note that this is a bitcode type system variable.

Thank you. Yeah, "Help" is my friend when I succeed in asking the question correctly for it to help!  I probably need help in mastering Help.

Thanks again, R.K. McSwain!

I opened one of our consultant's Autocad files and after that, the selection variable was changed to the lasso in My Autocad. I came here looking for the command to set it back to (1), and am happy to find it easily. I don't know why the consultant dwg changed my system variable either.

PICKAUTO is saved in the registry, which means it's a user/machine saved variable. It's not saved in the DWG file. A coincidence that it changed at the same time.

Why?????   Why Autodesk does this change randomly??  I spent 20 minutes of production time find an answer and to fix it?

Autodesk is a company: the company did nothing to those very old variables so far.

If you meant "...Why AutoCAD does this change randomly..." that is usually something the user (you) triggered or turned off accidentally doing something, it happens to all of us occasionally.

Consider taking advantage of SYSVARMONITOR command in modern versions of AutoCAD to set variables to the default settings as you discover them affecting you, and watch for alerts from that command when they do change.

Yes, it seemed to me that simply opening up a consultant's file can change this variable. I encourage everyone to become familiar with the commands for the command line.  I still find myself constantly reminding people about some of the other key ones, like MIRRTEXT and PSLTSCALE. Keep at it! 😉
