Issues when importing PDFs

I was working on a drawing in which I had to import 3 pdfs and explode them. As I worked more and more with the drawing many actions were becoming slower and slower, including switching to modelspace, zooms, printing, and basically anything xref related. A drawing audit took over 2 hours and found & cleaned several hundred errors, and it still didn't resolve performance speed. 
Upon deeper examination, I found that the importing/exploding of the pdfs created several hundred png image files. Apparently those were not necessary to my actual drawing so I detached them all. Doing so reduced my overall file size from 7mb to 1mb. Big difference, everything works fine once again.
My question: Is that typical ACAD behavior when importing a pdf? Or did I just happen to have some bad pdfs to start with?

It's definitely possible for pdfs to not contain only vector data but also raster or image date.

So what you may want to do at the Import PDF window is to uncheck Raster images:

Vector imports as vektor data,

Raster wil saveas .png files, which attachs to your .dwg.

And you keep the .png files? As trash on your drive?

Option/files/pdf import folder is where they stored

Thank you, Paul and Sebastian. I heard similar things from another colleague. I will have to unclick that raster setting on the next go-around.
