How to scale something in model space and keep the same scale in layout

I'm having trouble with scaling. I want to keep a scale of 1" = 20' in paper space so when I print it to pdf the measurements will be correct.  I also want to make the image I have in my model space look bigger, but when I scale it up the scale in paper space will no longer be 1" = 20'.  Is there a way to make the image bigger, but keep the same scale?

Hello,

1"=20' will always be the same scale for your viewport on paperspace. But if you find that after scaling up the image within the model space that it no longer fits within the viewport at 1=20, what you want to do is make the boundaries of the viewport bigger. So, grab the corner or side grips and stretch the viewport to fit the image. If you find the viewport is bigger than the paper boundaries on your layout tab, go to page setup and make the paper size bigger (do not scale to fit because that changes the scale again). If your image is depicting 100 feet, you are going to need at least 5" of paper to fit the viewport. So, guessing that you are sizing the image up to several hundred feet, you probably need a 24 or 36 inch paper boundary to fit at 1"=20'

You shouldn't be scaling anything in model space, everything in model space should be drawn full size, which is just how big it is.

It would help if you posted a dwg file and explain what everything is, but why does it need to be made 'bigger'.

Hello @Anonymous,

I would just like to clarify, Modelspace has no scale you set what are called the "UNITS" which are the units of measure you prefer to use (inches, feet, centimeters, meters etc.) Paperspace is where you would set up your document for printing select a scale to your drawing & create a Viewport etc.

If you would not like a scale applied you can use "Scale to fit" which would fit the drawing on the paper within the viewport window.

You should scale your image first in modelspace, so that one unit in the image is equal to one unit in modelspace. Then you create a viewport in paperspace (layout tab) and adjust the size of the viewport itself on the sheet, and then adjust the view scale either to what you need (if it fits), or to one that does fit.

If by some odd chance my nattering was useful -- that's great, glad to help. But if it actually solved your issue, then please mark my solution as accepted 🙂
