Getting Area fields to work with square metres

When working with fields for areas (polylines or hatches), there is an option for the units to be square feet when working with a drawing in Imperial (inches). It there any way to automatically do the same for square metres when working with a drawing in Metric (millimetres)?

Drawings in millimetres are the industry standard, and I'm frustrated by having to add a manual conversion multiplier every time. Does anyone have a solution for this?

I don't think so, if you are working in millimetres then that is what you get from all reports in AutoCAD. The multiplier in fields is there for that reason. But where do you find that option in imperial units?

If you are working in an imperial drawing and add a field to give you the area of an object, you set Property: to Area and set Format: to Architectural, and the area value defaults to square feet (not square inches).

Thought so, but that trick only works properly in an imperial file set to inches, (it does the same thing in a metric millimetre file giving the complete wrong value, it will report a 12x12mm square as 1 square foot in a field area), or even an imperial file set to use feet as units (a 12' by 12' square is also just 1 square foot in a field area). That method basically thinks everything is inches even if you use lightyears.

Unfortunately, metric units don't have such a 'disfunctional' function.
