Fields show default Attribute value, but won't update.

I have created a block, added an attribute to it, and then added fields that are set to the attribute value.  The fields are in MText, which is in the same block as the attribute.  

The fields show the default attribute value (???), but won't update when I change the attribute value.

Does anyone know what I've done wrong?

Looks like you're linking the Field to an Object that's an Attribute Definition

Well, when a BLOCK is inserted the Attribute Definition changes to become an Attribute.

So the Attribute Definition no longer exists for the Field to refer to:

I see.  Thankyou for explaining.  So, how do I achieve getting the attribute value into MText within the block the attribute resides?
