Edit Layer State Dialog Box - Problem Deleting Layers

I have found a problem with editing layer states (screenshot of dialogue box below).

I want to remove some layers from my layer state.  When I use the delete button at the bottom of the dialogue box, it appears to remove any selected layers as expected.  I then click OK to exit the dialogue.  However, if I then re-open the edit layer state dialogue, I find that some of the layers I just tried to remove are still there in the list.  It seems strange that the delete button only removes some but not all the layers I select.

The only solution I have found is to keep repeating the process of deleting the layers until I get to what I want.  Each time I repeat it, a few more layers are removed.  Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Wouldn't it be quicker to just create a new layerstate rather than repeatedly deleting and re-deleting layers? Just curious about time spent.

Can you please provide the information that Dean had mentioned? 

AutoCAD version and Windows version. 

What was the last release that you haven't experienced an issue like this? 

Is this a new or ongoing issue?

Hi Dean and Sarah,

I am using:

AutoCAD LT 2014

Windows 7 Enterprise, SP1

I have only used Layer States in this one version of AutoCAD so I don't know if there is a history to this problem.

I agree your suggestion to just create a new layer state would probably be a quicker work around - thank you.

Further to the comments above - I tried your suggestion of just creating a new layer state but it doesn't work because the new layer state contains all of the layers in the drawings and xrefs.  I would still have to work through this new layer state and remove the layers that I do not want.

What do you mean you are unable to create a new layerstate? Do you need help using the command? Did you create the original?

A layerstate ALWAYS contains all of the layers, you set ahead of time what the state is of each layer and the layerstate command takes a snapshot of those states. Are you doing that?

I can create a new layerstate ok, thank you.  Yes the new layerstate contains all the layers - but that is precisely the problem.  I only want the layer state to control some of the layers, which is why I am trying to use the delete layer button in the edit layerstate dialogue box. That's the button that doesn't seem to work very well.

So you want LAYERSTATE to ignore certain layers, let these layers do their own thing regardless of whether you run a layerstate or not. Correct?

Tell us about these layers: are they part of an XREF or something unique like these are AEC layers from a vertical version of AutoCAD (like Civil or MAP) but you only use plain AutoCAD?

I no longer use R2014 but in 2016 and 2017 I can delete layers from a layer list all day long and they stay gone.

Show us a DWG file with the problem present for you.

Thanks for the replies.  Yes the problem still exists - the remove layer button doesn't work properly. 

I can work around the problem as described, although it takes a lot longer. Sorry I don't want to get into uploading my drawings as I think it is a problem with the programme and not the drawings - I have encountered the same problem with several drawings now.

LAYERSTATE works on ALL layers in a file: you can set it to ignore the layers you do not want to deal with or turn them off, but that is it.

I still think it's quickest if you create a new layerState for every file or instance you need, as opposed to the slow process of manually deleting layers as you want.
