Easy method for drawing comb teeth?

I am working on drawing a few hair combs, and am curious if there is an easy way to draw the teeth without having to draw each one individually. My AutoCad skills are Newbie, and have been learning thru online tutorials etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Q1: Do you know what the dimensions and thicknesses /width / length and spacing of each comb tooth?

Q2: can you draw it by hand with the information you have?

Hi myblackberry09,

Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Please give me some ideas on the level of detail you are trying to achieve. Do you have specific dimensions or is this just a conceptual drawing? Are you doing this in 3D or 2D? I would be happy to share some resources, links to videos or even some suggestions to help you get this done.

Please let me know the desired end result.

These are the types of dimensions you need to draw a comb, in autocad or by hand with a pencil:

I am drawing this in 2D for now, until I can take a few AutoCad courses and develop some skills. As for the comb, I have a prototype comb in hand, and I want to draw it so I can create new designs etc. I did see some instructions for taking a picture, and importing it to autocad so that you can trace on a new layer. That might work, but it would be easier to make multiple teeth at once with the proper spacing, maybe a parallel line command?

I didn't know there was a custom comb ordering form....

There is a form for everything 🙂

Anyway, that's the kind of information you really need before you can start drafting, cad or paper: tracing over a picture might be fun for a little while but accuracy would be lacking for such a repetitive task like comb teeth.

Honestly, if you want my opinion: take your classes first. All the tools you need to draw a comb are all basic drafting tools you'll learn in the first days.

I guess I should have said I am somewhat familiar with AutoCad, just haven't used it in a while. When I worked in IT, I used to sit down with the engineers for a an hour a day so I could learn it. I know the basic commands, but that was AutoCad 2004. I will do my best to create what I need before my classes start next month to get a head start.

As for the tracing, I have a 1:1 scan of the comb itself, but why would I need to trace if I have the item in hand and can just draw it to scale. That was probably a stupid idea from the get go.

Thanks for the input.

Hi @Anonymous,

It sounds like you have a good understanding of where you need to go with this. As long as you have some understanding of AutoCAD, you might consider using Groups, Blocks, Array, and Measure to build your comb. If this is going to be a process that you will repeat numerous times you might even consider using dynamic blocks and perhaps Constraints.
