Document Version Control

I own a 3-person design firm. We are having issues with version control. I am trying to find a way to block others from opening and using an AutoCAD LT while a team member is actively using the file. At one time, we received a notice pop-up that stated someone was currently using the file and it gave you the option to open it "READ ONLY." Without this block and warning, we potentially have two team members unknowingly using a file at the same time. When one of them closes the file, their changes are at risk of not being saved in the file. Our company uses a Microsoft SharePoint team folder within OneDrive as a server. I spoke with Microsoft Sharepoint consultant and they said it would be Autodesk that controls this document control. I spoke to a local Autodesk tech support person and he said it would be the server company that controls this document usage. Please Help!

AutoCAD is not designed to work with cloud services OneDrive and Dropbox: you will need a traditional file server OS in order for AutoCAD to work as it did "at one time".

Well, that sucks. Poor design. Many firms are now using cloud services.

Is not Autodesk Vault meant to provide version control for AutoCAD?

Hi @Anonymous,

I found this thread as someone has added a new post after quite a while.

If you are still experiencing this problem I suggest that your users Checkout the drawing file rather than just opening it to edit it. That way, when someone else tries to access the file they will receive a notification that it is already checked out.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Yes, AutoDesk Vault provides version control and works quite well.  We implemented Vault some years back for our design team of 20.  They work from 2 locations and we replicate our files to servers in both using Autodesk Vault.  This way, they have local access to all files.  Also, it integrates with AutoCAD via a ribbon.  When you check out a file, it locks it on the server, shows who has it checked out, and copies it to a local working directory on your computer so you can do work on it offline.  When you check it back in, it copies the version from your local working directory back to the server and marks the file as checked in.  History is also available and rollback functionality is too.
