Datum dimensioning

How can I dimension from a datum without the dimensions being stepped - in the old days (Drawing boards - remember them?) the start of the first dimension was a dot and the other dimensions were basically short leaders in line with the dot. There isn't enough space for baseline spacing.

Set Base Line Spacing to 0, supress Dim Line 1 and set the Dim text horizontal aligment to Ext Line 2?
