AutoCAD LT - Is it possible to split (not explode) an array?

From the 'not one of my better ideas' department:

I have a single column of 4 symbols that I used as the source for a rectangular array; that is, making one single rectangular array versus 4 separate one-row linear arrays.

As it turns out, I now need to remove some of the instances in various locations, most of which are not in line vertically. So, when I delete the symbol at, say, row 2 column 6, all of the symbols in column 6 are deleted which is not desired.

Is there a way to break/split a rectangular array into smaller arrays? I don't want to explode this array if I can avoid it.

Hope this makes sense - if not, I can attach a file if needed.
