Autocad crashes when inserting a PDF

Anonymous
Not applicable

I am running AutoCAD LT 2017 on Windows 10.

Every time I try to insert a PDF Autocad crashes instantly.

If I try to open a dwg with an inserted PDF, AutoCAD crashes.

There is nothing wrong with the DWG files because they can be opened and modified on other seats of autocad in my company.

I have removed autocad updates to see if that was the problem.

I have restored autocad updates.

I have completely reinstalled autocad.

I have completely reinstalled Acrobat X.

The only thing I can thing of is that there is some system file that Autocad uses to read PDFs that was modified or changed by another program but I have no idea what it would be or why it wasn't fixed on a reinstall.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

thanks

Could you try logging in as a different user on your system and run AutoCAD in that environment?

Is the issue still the same?

Have you tried running a selective startup to test AutoCAD LT and your system in that environment?

I'm sorry I forgot to add the help link:

How to perform a selective startup in Windows

Try just running AutoCAD in that selective start up and post back if the problem is still there even in that work environment.

Running in the selective startup environment, per the instructions you sent me still exibits the crashing issue.

While logged in as a different user I was able to manipulate PDFs within DWG files normally.

Okay since ACAD LT didn't crash and you were able to edit your drawing try the following.

  • Reset your AutoCAD LT settings (save a copy of your settings as needed).
  • Try running a brand new drawing file and adding a PDF and an existing drawing.

It could be something in your profile and or how it communicates with AutoCAD LT.

Post back and let me know if resetting to defaults helps.

After resetting autocad to default settings the problem is fixed.  IT also showed up and did general cleanup on the machine so I don't really know exactly what fixed it but I will assume it was the advice on the forum. so thanks!

If I am able to recreate the problem again I will update this post.

If it does happen again post back to this thread or create a new one.

the plot thickens...

After resting my settings; problem solved as discussed.

Then I applied a software update.  Problem returned.

Then I reset my settings again. Problem solved.

I have also synced my A360 account settings and the problem is still fixed.  It seems there is something in the process of applying the update that breaks the insert PDF feature.  In the Autodesk app it tells me that all available updates have been installed.

Could be something worth looking into.

Yeah that's definitely odd.

I'll try and see if I can perform a fresh install and recreate the same workflow. I'll post back and let you know of any findings.

If you do continue to crash while inserting a PDF finish all the crash report steps and submit the CER report. It'll help in trying to figure this out.

Thanks.

Hmm... When I was having this problem I was not getting the option of creating a crash report. Upon reflection I was getting a message from Windows that says "This application has stopped working." And then it would close autocad.

I tried to recreate the issue on another seat within the office but installing the updates had no effect on the ability to insert PDFs. The issue is isolated to me and my setup. It is crazy!

The good news is that the insert PDF function is currently working but I will let you know if I have any success recreating the problem.

Restoring to defaults cured the problem... for now.

Is there a way to catalog settings before restoring to default? It means a lot of rebuilding after. I used the save defaults option to a zip folder, but cannot find any info on how to reload them.
