Im trying to join a polyline to a line? Maybe that is the issue? How can one convert a polyline to a line? In a new file the join command works fine joining a polyline to a line and a line to a line. Maybe Ill go one step further and state that I have CAD on my machine but have to work of a VPN. We work remote so there is no alternative.

Are they actually touching (a requirement) or not? Zoom in as close as possible to find out.
AND... What is the error message at the commandline when this does not work? Expand it to be 3-4-10 lines tall first.

They were touching. After several attempts of moving the node and re applying it eventually worked. It was saying something to the effect of 2 lines selected and then 1 object discarded and then would not join. Im

I noticed you didn't comment on the VPN scenario. Reading online from Autodesks site I saw some verbiage that seem to suggest maybe this program isn't suited for VPN? Can you speak to that at all? As a new user coming off many years of Vectorworks I find this program seems incredibly slow to print, open files, update xrefs? Im at about 450mbps on my connection. If I knew a faster connection would help I would be happy to get it. I worry that as old as ACAD is if it was ever considered for VPN? I'm just trying to come to terms with the what the expectations of this program should be. I dont really have any point of reference until I've worked with  it for some time.

That error message almost always means they were not touching. not much else. Sorry. Glad you got it sorted.

VPN works fine for everyone in our offices when they opt to work remotely, we're not seeing any issues, but then again we apparently all live in areas with exceptionally high-speed internet access metro areas too, as does the office.
Check with your IT folks, they need to be fully involved, explore using RDP as a test to see if that helps speed thing up better for you. Also get with your IT folks to read this (and the additional articles links at the bottom of that page) https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Unable... and possibly start doing this https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-forum/autocad-extremely-slow-when-connected-to-vpn/m-p/111270...

Seeing lots of suggestions to work of the local drive. That would be fine if reference links wernt in gigantic font across the whole sheet. Maps that are xref'd in go missing and you cant really work with links broken all over the place. Then again this is all fairly new so maybe there is a way to break the link temporarily and only see it in the xref pane?
