Xrefs do not reload - AutoCad 2016

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hey,

So I am having a bit of a problem with some Xrefs and Autocad2016. I have a main Masterplan drawing with a couple of xrefs attached to it. I am constantly working on the main drawing and also making changes to the Xrefs as I go along, so I need to keep them updated.

The issue is that whenever I make a change in one xref, save the file and try reloading it on the main drawing, it takes a few tries for it to actually reload.

The balloon notifiaction appears, I click to reload and nothing happens. I go back to the xref, resave, go back to the main drawing, ballon appears, click to reload and nothing. I end up doing it a few times before it actually happens.

Not the biggest issue out there, but just crazy frustrating.

Thanks

Elizabeth

Is this a new problem, or unique to one set of files?
Where do you store your files (on your PC, on a Windows server, remote server, or something like DropBox or similar?

What is your Windows OS?
Is 2016 fully patched and updated?

Hi Dean,

So to answer your questions,

New problem and seems unique to these files (although I have been working exclusively on this project for about a month). Files have been -purged, recovered, audited and reggaps deleted.

All files are saved on the office's main server.

Cad is fully patched, updated and serviced.

And my PC's info is as follows

Windows 7 Professional - 64-bit

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz

RAM: 16 GB

Just to let you know that the main xref I am using has other files xrefed (attached) to it, all of which have been also -purged, audited and recovered.

Thanks for your time

Can you detach and reattached the XREFs, and ensure the Full-Path option is selected? Then QSAVE the top file and try to repeat the issue to see.

If not, and only as a text, move all these files to a single folder on your PC: try to repeat the problem. Still there?

Morning,

I detached and re-attached and it seems fine now... Strange cause I always attached with Full Path. Not sure if it was the number of xrefs, but I am sure that shouldn't really affect it in such a way.

Thanks for your help. I might be re-posting if it comes back, but it seems all good for now.

We are having similar issues with 2016 and xrefs.  We are able to attach or overlay an xref and it will show up like it is supposed to.  If we unload the xref and later try to re-load that xref it will not re-load.  The only way to get the drawing to show up again is to detach and re-attach it.  We have tried storing files on a network folder and local folders with the same result.

It seems to be a bug in Autocad 2016.  2015 had a similar issue until it was fixed with a service pack.

This is very frustrating.

Morning moatman,

I am now at a point where instead of unloading xrefs when I don't need them (so I can work better and faster), I just switch off the layer that I have placed the xref on. It is very frustrating and I do hope the fix the bug soon. I always hate it when my company upgrades to the latest version of AutoCad, cause that just means unresolved issues and bugs.

I work at an MEP Firm and lately the xrefs are not refreshing or reloading even after closing and reopening files. I have to individually open each file, unload all xrefs and reload, set layer , freeze all layers not need for 3 disciplines. I work with ACAD 14 & 16. is there a command I mistakenly deactivated?

VISRETAIN variable in the top file: sounds like you need to change the setting.

I still have this problem in LT 2017; I haven't seen it in LT 2018 yet, but I don't use 2018 as much as I use 2017.  The only fix I have found that works is detaching and re-attaching the xref, which is extraordinarily annoying to say the least.

@pendean has suggested (as have others in other threads) to adjust the VISRETAIN setting, which has worked for a lot of people.  It hasn't worked for me, but is worth a try.

I wonder if there could be a hidden/temp file that is keeping the reloaded file from displaying correctly.

Hi,

Same issue in Arch2018.  I have detached, reloaded, unloaded, reloaded, purged, audited, and all those fun things.

I checked other files, and it looks like the xref isn't loading on any of my other files.  Super frustrating.

I'm wondering if i copy the file, archive the old one, then bring the new one in will work??

Currently have the sound of charlie brown screaming in my head. stay tuned.

Dear,

I am facing the same problem in xrafs and try to solve by detach & reattached & so many other things, but all efforts are useless. In addition to this when I start my auto cad  first time in the daily morning & give the command Xrafs first time it take a very long time to re load any xraf file.

Hi,

Which operating system do you have, which operating system does the server have?

I have seen situations that the drive mappings to the server needs a lot of time after the login. Starting Windows Explorer and click through each of the drive letters (just get the content of them shown) helps to then having the connections established and so starting AutoCAD with network stored files (and so also XRefs) are working better.

If that helps then contact your admin as there are some issues in the network or the network connection from your workstation.

Hi,

>> i still have the problem

Inside this thread more than one issue were discussed, which problem do you have?

Also please start command _ABOUT and show us a screenshot of that dialog so we can see which version of AutoCAD you are using and if your AutoCAD is updated.
