Xref that has annotative text/block in paperspace

Our office is migrating our dimensions, text and certain blocks to be annotative.  We're finally jumping into the 21st century :-).  I'm currently in the learning process of how Autocad 2017 deals with annotative items, so please forgive me.  I mostly understand and have had zero issues converting our text styles, dimensions styles, templates and etc., the one and so far only issue that I'm having is this:

I draw a detail in model space, I set the annotation scale to 1" = 1'-0".  I open our sheets file that has our title block xrefed onto a layout tab, S1.0 ( paperspace).  I xref in the detail onto sheet S1.0, which is in paperspace and the plot scale is set to 1:1, I choose the location of the detail and I scale the detail down to 1/12.  I do that so the detail is now 1:1.  This is where I'm having the issue.  Sometimes I need to change the scale of a detail from 1"=1'-0" to 3/4" = 1'-0".  I open the detail xref, I select all of the mleaders, select "Add/Delete Scales" on the ribbon and add 3/4" = 1'-0" to the object scale list.  I then change the annotative scale of the drawing from 1"=1'-0" to 3/4"=1'-0".  So the scale of my detail is now 3/4" = 1'-0".  I save my drawing, I then go into my sheets file and reload my detail xref.  I then scale my detail down 3/4 so that the detail is now at 3/4"=1'-0". The scale of my annotative objects (text, dimensions and blocks) stay at  1" =1'-0" and don't change to 3/4" = 1'-0".  Why doesn't the annotative objects in my xref change to 3/4" = 1'-0"?  I've tried to detach the detail xref, purge the sheets drawing and re-xref the detail back in my drawing in paperspace and the text/dimensions are still showing at 1"=1'-0".

I've attached the dwg's that I'm working with to this thread, so please review.

You're scaling what you've previously drawn (lines, arcs, circles and such) and putting them in paper space?

Put the detail in modelspace, not paperspace, and open a viewport in PS to view that detail.  Change the scale of the viewport to 1"+1'-0"

Yeesh.  That is a really convoluted way to use paper space.  The intent of ACAD is to only have to draw something once, and then, using paper space, show your model space in whatever scale you need without destructively editing your drawn geometry.  Whoever suggested your current method is just making more work for all involved.

Actually it's a lot less convoluted and less time consuming than putting all of your xrefs in MS and creating a VP for each of the different scales that you have on the detail page. The method that we are using causes less work, less time.  I'm assuming this is your method of creating a detail sheet:

On your detail sheet, you create a VP (step 1), you change the annotative scale of that VP to the appropriate scale (step 2), you lock the VP, (step 3), you now xref in your detail at 1:1, (step 4), if you have a detail that is at a different scale, you create another VP, step 5...  My way of xrefing in a detail has 2 steps.  I'm on my Detail sheet (which is in PS), I xref my detail onto my sheet (step 1).  While in the xrefattach command it gives me the option to scale my xref to the appropriate scale so I'm still in my step 1.  Step 2, I move the detail to where I need it to go.  It sounds like your way is a lot more convoluted than my way.  Plus the more viewports that you have in a drawing the slower and more sluggish the drawing is when switching layout tabs and when you publish a drawing.

I have a project sheet file, this file is the file that we xref all of our details, plans and project title block into.  All Sheet Layout tabs are set to 1:1.  After the detail has been draw we xref the detail onto the appropriate detail sheet.  On our detail sheets we might have 3 different scales going on, 1 1/2" = 1'-0", 1" = 1'-0", and 3/4" = 1'-0".  It literally takes me 2 minutes to place and organize 18 details onto a detail sheet.  If a detail is 1 1/2" = 1'-0", I scale it down by 1/8, if a detail is 1" = 1'-0" I scale it down by 1/12, if a detail is 3/4" = 1'-0" I scale it down by 1/16 and so on.  Very quick and very efficient.  The only draw back of this is if I change the annotative scale of the detail, the annotative objects don't update in the project sheet file.  I rarely need to change the scale of a detail but when I do this issue arise.

Do what works for you.  I avoid scaling drawn geometry, but to each their own.

Hi @jcavanagh,

I think I agree that most of this belongs in modelspace. I have found that by using a grid based drawing placement in modelspace helps me control where and how details get arranged.

Using this method with pre-scaled viewports (and locked) allows very very quick assembly of me details. I can also use annotative or non-annotative text in this situation. ( I actually prefer non for this issue though).

I find annotative scaling best on plan work that might eventually be scaled at many different scales.
