xref notification upon drawing open in AutoCAD

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi

In 2011 a guy on the net had an issue with this and it has clearly not been resoved... any suggestions??

"the "a reference file has changed and may need reloading" bubble is constantly popping up when i open drawings where the xref has changed since last opening the file.  I though demand loading would cure this, but apparently not.

any way to just make acad reload the references so they're always up to date? "

" recover, purge, audit - nothing finds any error, and everytime i open a file, the xref (and also any datalinks) need to be manually reloaded.

i KNOW acad used to do this automatically - i don't know what i'm missing.

i just want to open a drawing and see my references and datalinks up-to-date.  no opening the xref palette and right-clicking and reloading or updating. "

...sit with the same issue now 5 years later in CAD 2017

Please assist

Thank you

Set the system variable: XRefNotify to 1

- the baloon notification  won't appear, you will still see a small exclammation mark on the Xref icon in the bottom right of the screen to know a modification appened, (keep an eye on it if you want, or ignore it - your choice)

- The modified xref will reload automatically only when you reopen the drawing..

You shouldn't be seeing that notification upon opening. AutoCAD automatically loads the latest when openign a file. AFAIK, there is not way to store an older version of the reference, as it is a reference and, by definition, is not stored in the referencing file.

Are you seeing that the XREF is acutally out of date and does need to be reloaded or are you getting the latest and the message seems to be for no reason?

Is it possible you are dealing with nested references, i.e. you are referencing a file that references another?

AutoCAD does this when the xrefs are saved down to an older version than what you are running. The fix is to open each xref and save it as the current version. If you must save to an older version for compatability with other users then you will just have to ignore the balloons.

If that is true, that would explain why I have never seen it happen. SAVEAS an older version is not the appropriate way to make drawings compatible with older versions for multiple reasons. I don't even know why that is an option. You should always export to older versions. This will convert newer objects and remove newer features from objects thus preventing incompatibility issues.
