i keep getting this error when i export a drawing.

Command: _AecExportToAutoCAD2010
Binding Xref "X24148S"...
Error: At least one of the specified xrefs failed to bind for an unknown reason.
ERROR: Xref-Bind failed (eWasOpenForWrite)
ERROR: could not process Xrefs!

The drawing has only 1 xref, I copied the objects, made a new drawing, purged, audited, etc and still does not bind.

The error seems to tell you the XREF is open and needs to be saved.

Q: why no bind the XREF first, QSAVE, before you try to 'export it to R2010'?

FYI, you might want to fix the XREF file first: run RECOVER command to open it, then QSAVE.

the xref will not bind.  It says it is open for editing, but it is not.  I have remade the xref file, by copying all the linework into a blank drawing, audited and purged that drawing.  Still will not bind.

Restart your PC, then try again (keep your Windows File manager closed, open nothing but AutoCAD).
If you cannot use XBIND command to bind it yourself, no other tool in the program is going to be able to do that either.
