Xeon based Windows 7 compatible HP workstation recommendation

Hi there,

We have a staff member who uses AutoCAD Civil 3D 2019 and a couple of ESRI ARCGis Pro.

The time has come to replace his older HP Z2xx series workstation that was at least 6 years old. I have been tasked with spec'ing out a new workstation for him which normally wouldn't be an issue, but due to other legacy apps in our environment, we are not ready to move to Windows 10 yet. I'm after a recommendation of a HP workstation (workstation class not business desktop) that has a Xeon processor compatible with Windows 7. i.e the older generation. I've done a bunch of reading but am getting a little lost with all the different models of Xeon CPUs and which ones are compatible with Windows 7 (in the same way that the 6th gen i5 and i7 are compatible but the 7th gens are not). I already have a Nvidia Quadro P2000 card to install into the new workstation.

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Hi,

I don't know the HP workstations, just one word to "Xeon based".
AutoCAD mainly works as single threaded application, which means less kernels, but higher frequency is the base for better performance. Comparing i7 vs. Xeon makes exact that difference, i7 has less kernels and higher frequency compared to Xeon ... and that's why I would prefer i7.

you want to purchase a new PC, but then cripple it with an old OS like WIn7, and find non-optimized hardware that will still run in Win7. Interesting dilemma.

May I ask what legacy apps you are all still hanging on to that WIn10 is not viable?

Thanks for the reply Alfred.

I've noticed both the HP Z4 G4 workstations in i7 and Xeon flavours so definitely both options.

A HP rep has confirmed that the Z4 workstations can have Windows 7 installed on them and I've confirmed that drivers are available on their site for that model.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the reply pendean.

I'm not exactly sure how we would be "crippling" the hardware given that Win 7 enterprise can support up to 192gb RAM and we are looking at getting a machine with 64gb ram. (the user has never gone above 35gb usage based on performance monitor stats). The Quadro P2000 also has Win 7 64-bit drivers available.

Our "dilemma" as you put it, is resources and time. We have kicked off a Windows 10 deployment project, and are testing all of the apps used across multiple departments on our fleet of approx. 400 PCs. In addition, creating a Win10 ENT base image, downloading and importing all drivers into SCCM, creating a new Win10 task sequence so that we can perform unattended deployments to the multiple models of machines we have. At this point in time, doing a one off install and manual build of a win10 machine then having to support a single user on a new OS just isn't feasible right now.
