Workspace Functionality

I’m trying to establish a workspace in Autocad 2016 with an array of tools on a second monitor so that I can maintain a workflow similar to one I have been using for many years.

In Autcad 2016, you can pull a panel off the ribbon tab and float it onto a second monitor.  You can expand the panel horizontally or vertically (by clicking the arrow), but there is no “pin” to lock it expanded.

Alternately, can expand the panel on the ribbon and then lock it with the “pin.”  But then you cannot pull the panel off the ribbon.

To work most effectively, I want to display the most commonly used tools on the right hand monitor, freeing up drawing space on the main monitor.  Then I would save this “workspace” along with others depending on the task at hand.

How can I regain this functionality?

If your old work space is still avaliable you can transfer it from you last AutoCAD version : https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Transf...

f that is not an option you will have to use the CUI

type the command CUI. If you are simply moving a few things around it may not be to hard but the more advanced your customization the more indpeth you will have to get.

Specific to your need i might create a custom panel and import all the command you want (frequently use) to it.

type CUI

And add a Tab

Got to the panel section and add a panel

Find the command you want and drag it to your panel

Drag your panel to your tab

at the top of the dialog select transfer tab then select new customization file.

Then transfer you newley created tabes and panels to your customization file and save and applyCadnoobcustom6.png

Make sure (if your panels/tabs arent showing) you make the the panels visible to your workspace. Right click on an empty space on your ribbon.

Could you maybe clarify the question?  Tearing off Ribbon panels shouldn't affect setting up a workspace.  Are you having problems saving or restoring the workspace?  Or...?

Not sure how to make it clearer.  In Autocad 2016, there are several panels across the top of the screen above the drawing area (Draw. Modify, Annotation, Layers, Block, Properties, Groups, Utilities, Clip[board, View). I use two monitors. I would like to move these panels to to the right hand monitor to free up drawing space on the left hand monitor and to make the tools more readily available in one spot (like I have for years in previous versions of Auotcad).

When the panels are on the ribbon on the main screen, you can expand them (with the little arrow) and then lock them open (with the push pin).  However, when I move them off the ribbon over to the right hand monitor, I can open them with the arrow (they change to opening right instead of down) but when I move the mouse off the panel, it collapses back.  There is no pin to lock them open.

I've got lots of space.  I don't need them to collapse back.  I would like them to remain open and useable, but on the right hand monitor.

That does clear things up a bit.  There isn't an out-of-the-box solution to what you want, but you can create copies of the Ribbon panels in the CUI editor and move the needed parts 'above the fold' so they are still shown when torn off.

edit: just saw that this is what @dgorsman said.

to change this

CADnoobCUI5.gif

Go to your custom CUI and move commands out of the slide out

And it will be what you seem to need
