Work missing from file but visible in preview

When I open my saved file, the geometry is missing from model space but the file preview shows right where I left off when I last saved my work.

I've tried checking the layers to make sure everything on/unfrozen,   toggled the  hardware acceleration, opened the file on another computer with the same results.

This was all drawn in model space and is not visible in my paperspace viewports, but I can see the notes that I've created in paperspace are there, so the file did save in that respect.

What is odd, is that it is not just the last session of work, but the entire floorplan and all linework associated with this project that is missing.

Any ideas?

@kimJW6W5 As final resort you can check for the

  • Look for: .BAK and .sv$ files from the temp folder %temp%

  • Rename to .DWG and open the file.

@kimJW6W5 Can't tell if anyone explained it, but the preview you see is just a static photo/snapshot buried inside the DWG file to just show you what your file used to look like at the last successful save. It is not and never has been a live look inside what is your file now.

What size is your DWG file? And where is your BAK file in the same folder and is it larger/smaller?

And how about your autosave file that is dumped into your Windows login TEMP folder, do you see any SV$ and BAK files of about the same time stamp you can use to recover your DWG files?

How about checking your off-your PC/laptop system daily or weekly backups, any luck finding DWG or BAK files there? Your I.T. folks would have to get involved if you are in an office.

Thank you, I was able to locate the temp files but when I tried recovering, those were also blank.

I also tried opening on different machines and restarting renaming.

The solution:  I was able to get Autocad and they ended up running AUDIT->PURGE which recovered the information
