When will you add multi-user dwg editing?

I find it inexcusable that AutoCAD does not have a multi-user editing capability.

Programs like QuickBooks offer this, for a far less expensive product.

I understand you are trying your hardest to push people to Revit, and that is what it is.  But if you are not going to add BIM or multi-user capability to AutoCAD, then you need to at least drop the price, as it is now a vastly inferior and out-dated product.

If you could at least add multi-user dwg editing, I could see a huge uptick in license sales, as the increased capability would be incredible.  Many users deal with large projects, and have to resort to xref overlays and all manner of trickery, when all they really want is for a handful of people to be working on the same dwg at the same time.

I understand your concerns here. May I suggest another option of using AutoCAD 360 for multi user editing. I absolutely understand you wanted to see them in AutoCAD.  However you could explore the cloud application.

Autocad 360" is able to let multiple users view and mark up and edit drawings at the same time. It is cloud based and so can be used on any PC, tablet, or even smartphone.

That option will not work if you are using civil 3d

hi @honkinberry

Thank you for your feedback.

As far as I know, AutoCAD does not support multi-user editing yet.

however, AutoCAD 360 does allows multiple user edit the same dwg at the same time, please feel free to try it out:  http://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad-360/overview

Thanks,

Hello

1) A real and reliable multi-user Editing CAD program is very complex to design (and to test) !

2) If I remember well there was a dream (a long time ago) into Autodesk called DOO : Drawing on/into Oracle

3) We had it "a little bit" with old releases of ACAD MAP (MAP R5/R6 until MAP 2009-2010 about)

with the OLD Oracle driver, NOT the same with the FDO Oracle driver ...

4) With the drawing group and queries (of ACAD MAP), we have also a "curious" multi-user editing feature ...

5) With the NEW FDO Oracle driver of ACAD MAP (2009-201X) , we can "also" do multi-user editing into Oracle

(Possible also with SQL Server Spatial or PostGIS) BUT all users have to be trained and they must follow rules ...

6) Even with REVIT, it is not an easy task to organize multi-user updates on a big central project (with many sub-projects) !

Regards, Patrice

PS: I have an user of ACAD MAP since the ADE module on ACAD R12 ...

Actually multiple people concurrently editing objects in the same DWG  has been possible for 15-20 years......

The trick is to use AutoCAD Map3d, query in the elements you need, edit, and save back the results.

That said, intelligently breaking your project apart into multiple reference files is a whole lot simpler.  Sheet sets, layouts, xref's all get around the multi-user single dwg file concern quite easily, with out adding the potential for conflicts that would be inherent in a multi-user drawing database based on DWG files.
