What LAPTOP do you use? What would you recommend? Brands?

I am aware that this subject comes up a lot.  I am fully aware of the system requirements.  Within these requirements I have found prices varying up to $1800 between to different manufacturers.  I would appreciate some feedback as to what you have experienced.  Currently I have a Dell 17" XPS but its 8 years old and I need to purchase new and SOON.  Thank you in advance for sharing your thought and opinions with me.

I'm a big fan of the Dell Alienware laptops. You can pick up a decent configuration for 1800. I have a Last years 17" model and it does great.

Thank you. I've looked at those too.
HP Omen with the right hardware (same as Dell Precision) is almost $1000 Cheaper than Dell. I can't help but to think there's gotta be something wrong with this picture.

Dell bought alienware so they can put alienware name on their laptops and charge the alienware premium price. I'm not saying alienware isn't good but you are paying extra just for the name over similar other laptops brands sometimes. I have an MSI ghost that I bought maybe 1.5 years ago. I've been very happy with it.

There aren't that many companies that make laptop parts so most brands have the same parts in them anyway. It's like Apple Iphones and samsung galaxy phones are direct competition to each other yet samsung makes the screens in apple's phones. There just aren't any companies that can mass produce the screens so apple has to buy samsungs. Laptops parts are the same. Last time I checked(years ago) there were only like 3 companies that can mass produce laptop parts. Obviously those companies sell their parts the cheapest because of the sheer volume they can make over other smaller manufacturers. In turn most laptop companies buy their parts from those select few companies that mass produce. Long story short if you stick with any major brand name and not some brand you never heard of then the laptop should be comparable to any other one of a major brand with similar specs.

Companies I'd recommend in no particular order: hp, msi, asus, dell, lenvo(IBM), sony. I'm sure there's more too. I've personally had a laptop from all these companies except dell. MSI and lenvo are probably my favorites. Never had a problem finding a driver or drivers being updated even when the laptop started to age. I've had some trouble with HP not updating drivers much sooner than you'd think they would support things. That might have just been my personal experience with my particular laptop though.  The asus I had was a laptop with lower specs I used basically like a ipad or a chromebook for traveling so it didn't really compare to a high end machine. It was a cheap price for what I got though. The sony was nice but I think it was on the expensive side for what it was. It just seemed fragile. I'm not sure about now but lenvo used to make tanks. That's why tons of companies used them for employee laptops that companies provided. I bought a used one off ebay for super cheap once just for a girlfriend to use for college. (all just for email and word). That thing was like 10 years old and still ran great and she treated it like a cheap phone tossing it around.

After my long post my suggestion to compare them is  not to try and do it at a best buy or just on Dell's site that. Best buy only has a few laptops and dell's site you can make any laptop you want but there's nothing to compare them too. Go to a site like Newegg or tigerdirect. On a site like that you can put in the specs you want and then see many many laptops that fit what you want. That way your are comparing apples to apples on a level playing field. It's also a good way to see if you drop one spec a tiny bit the price drops drastically sometimes. Sometimes the sacrifice is worth a small drop in specs. Like if you need it for school but when schools over you'll get a new one or a company one. A lower stat might not be as future proof or last as long but if you have a time that it needs to last and it's not that long then it won't matter much. Like buying not the latest processor but the one before it. Most laptops out perform the software so the latest isn't always that much better. It is for some things though like video editing or games. For autocad probably not much difference.

My thoughts:

• I can't suggest anything as long as I don't know what for it's needed. Think about the question "I need a car, which one do you recommend" ... without telling us if your daily drive is a 200km distance on a highway with 200 km/h or your drive is just a few km on farm-lane with 5 persons and a lot of package... The same is needed to know for which programs do you need, which type of documents are you working with and how big are the projects
• I can't suggest anything as long as I don't know where you are living, the products (and support) might differ depending on your location/country.

I ended up purchasing a Dell XPS 15 with 17-7700hq NVIDIA GTX 1050
Once I learned that you CHOOSE what video card you want to use with what program (AutoCAD LT 2018) it now seems to be working ok.
