Upgrading from AutoCAD 2017 to 2019

Hey guys,

I currently have the student version of AutoCAD 2017 that I downloaded back in 2017.

Would I be able to update to AutoCAD 2019, or would I have to download the 2019 Student Version again?

Hi @patrick.odonoghue2,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

There is no difference between an educational and a full version of AutoCAD other than the licensing you apply to it.  If you are still a student and eligible for continuing your educational usage, you should be able to use the full version of 2019 as long as you apply appropriate licensing to it.

Thanks for the reply John!

So just to double check - will I update through the application I have on my PC at the moment, or must I download it again from the website?

Why you wrote "AGAIN"? If you want to have 2019, you have ti install 2019 (before you have to download 2019, which is another program!)

- download

- install

- happy (if you have a 2019 license, which I can not verify)

Realize that the 2019 Student version will plot the EDU stamp on all four sides of the page.  Although an instructor should have no problem with that, some object to the aesthetics of the plot.  As you know 2017 Student version doesn't plot with the EDU stamp.  You are only allowed to use student versions for educational purposes and not for commercial projects, so from that standpoint it doesn't matter which you use.

Perfect - sorry just one more question: will I uninstall 2017 before
downloading 2019, or will they automatically go together when I download
2019?

Hi,

you can have both installed, 2017 as well as 2019 (and also both will work as long as your licensing is ok with that).

Hello,

Here is the solid answer to your question...

You should login to your Autodesk Education Community account using the same credentials as prior.  You will be able to download and install AutoCAD 2019 and other products with educational licensing.

Also, many professional keep old versions of AutoCAD installed but I typically recommend that students uninstall ALL old versions of software because their PC's are usually not as high performance as in professional working environments.  You will save headaches by removing the old versions.  Be sure to use the Autodesk Uninstall tool in your programs folder and then check your installed programs or apps manager to see if any residual items remain to be uninstalled.

Lastly, if you have customized AutoCAD you may wish to backup your customization (workspaces, menus, toolbars, etc...) using the CUI command before uninstalling.  You can also backup any of your own templates you might have saved in the templates folder.

Hope this helps,

Blaine

Sounds like a Windows Admin issue, right?

I have the same question since that I am having some issues with scaling for the 2017 version because I am using the application on a device with a 4k screen monitor. The the letters on the drawing screen are very tiny and I seem to not find a solution that can fix it. Also, I have read online that the 2017 version does not support 4k screens, anyhow I just wanted to find out whether I have to download the latest version on the website or is there a way to download it from the AutoCAD application.

Hi,

>> I have read online that the 2017 version does not support 4k screens

Install the update AutoCAD 2017.1.2, that has improvements for higher resolutions and support of Windows DPI-scaling.

I have tried that but it does not seem to fix the problem so I installed the latest version instead. Thank you for the help though!
