Unable to join Polylines

Anonymous

I am having issues joining polylines. I have been able to join many of them but for some strange reason, I am not able to join some of them. In the attached file, I am trying to create a polyline for each state's unique border with another state.

You will see this issue for the Washington Oregon border (as well as in other places).

Would appreciate any help - I haven't been able to successfully resolve this even after looking at the other forum postings.

Without looking at the file, they might have different Z values? I would check via the Properties Palette.

Select all of the elements

Right Click -> Properties

In the Properties Palette pulldown, select Lines

In the properties of the lines, check to see if the Z is the same value, or if it says "Varies" then change the Z to be 0 and they should all be flat lines, which you could then connect.

Some of your Polylines report as closed which makes it impossible have a connection to another polyline.

Select a polyline and look at the polyline properties.

Hi,

I could see that you have downloaded the map from the website and these drawings won't be accurate and the polyline will be self-intersecting at few places though the polyline says it's closed.

So the best way would be to use command "BOUNDARY" to create boundary for each state. If the boundary created, then you need to check if the lines are not self-intersecting or there are no gaps between the lines and correct them and then try the boundary command again.

  1. It's a student version so I wouldn't use it with anything that isn't educational.
  2. Start with overkill.  You have 91 duplicate objects and 364 overlapping objects.  Then decide what you really need to join.  The suggestion of using boundary is a good one.  That would work best if you want to have a single polyline to enclose most of the continental states.

Hello,

Check all the lines are polyline, to convert it into polyline type command PE then type M (to select all the line) and hit ENTER

Then Type JOIN in the command box below. select all the lines hit ENTER...

For what it's worth, I had no problem connecting the two pieces of that border, either with PEDIT's Join option, or with JOIN, or with FILLET at zero radius.  So I wonder what else might be going on in your software....

For lightweight Polylines, it is what is called Elevation in the Geometry section of the Properties palette:

there is a setting so when you press join you can join pline segments together without having to enter the PEDIT command, but that setting is often turned off and i dont know the name of the setting;
