The Block Won't Turn Into a Solid

The Block Won't Turn Into a Solid

I have a block that is "blocking" me from exporting my design as a .stl file... It has been quite possibly the most annoying thing I have ever encountered. I made a shape - a 2D closed figure swept along a helix - but the x and y scale factors were off. Autocad has no way (as far as I know) of editing these attributes unless the object is converted into a block. So I converted the object and changed the x and y scale factors. Now I can't change the block back into a solid. I've searched for hours online to try to find a solution to this. I've tried exploding the block, only to have the console tell me that it "Cannot explode that block." The "Allow Exploding" setting is enabled for both blocks. I've tried converting the block into a mesh via the block editor. I've tried exploding the object in the block editor. I've tried using the CONVTOSOLID command to convert the block to an object. All I want is to be able to 3D print the model. The .dwg file is attached below. Any sort of help is extremely appreciated.

Hi,

which version of AutoCAD do you have?

Can you upload the drawing so we can see the content and play with the data on our systems?

Good! The forum is in the right section now. I am using Autocad 2017. I thought I uploaded the drawing in the main post, but I shall attach it here too.

Hi,

nothing attached, can you try

a) to zip the file and upload the zip

b) use another Internet browser to answer & attach

I'm having some trouble attaching the file. I hit "Browse" and select the file, then hit "Post," but I can't see the file afterwards. Is there another way to upload the file?

I put the file in a zip and I'm uploading it in Chrome this time. Hopefully this works.

Hi,

your drawing is successfully uploaded now :cara_guiñando_un_ojo:

It contains 3D-Solid objects which can directly be exported as STL.

And the two blockreferences (with the name "A$C3AD50F07") are not that easy to identify, copying the content of the blockdefinition into a new drawing shows what it should be, but I don't see the content in modelspace ... strange.

What did you do to get such a blockname? Or did you create this part with another software and imported it into AutoCAD?

However, which program do you use to convert the STL to GCODE for your printer?

Most appications (e.g. Cura or Simplify3D) do have the option to do their own scaling and that is what I would do, create the 3D-Solid with scale 1 and then rescale the Z-value in your slicing application ... will that work?

Thank you so much for looking into this issue! I am very new to Autocad (and 3d modeling in general), and I am unfamiliar with how blocknames work. The name "A$C3AD50F07" was given to the block when I used the _PASTEBLOCK command with the helix shape. I did everything in Autocad. As for the printer, I am using a "Cube 3" from 3D Systems (http://www.3dsystems.com/3d-printers/personal/cube). It comes with software to convert common file types (.stl, .obj, etc.) into files that the printer accepts. The software is called "Cube Print" and is available at this URL address: http://www.3dsystems.com/shop/support/cube/downloads I'll check out Cura and Simplify3D too. Anything that will make the block printable while maintaining its shape will work. If all else fails I would be willing to simply remake the shape.

Hi,

>> The software is called "Cube Print"

I guess most software packages do have the option to scale the STL content, so also scaling your object X=70%, Y=70% and Z=100% (as you had scaled the blockreference) should work well.

For your drawing: I don't know what happened to your block as I don't see the block-content in modelspace. But at least to explode a block with different X/Y/Z-scalings is always an issue (also from geometry side). If you do have the original path and contour I would first change the path in Z-direction (height of helix) and then create the 3D-solid from scratch.
