surfaces vs 3dfaces

As I work on a simple 3d model, I would like to find an alternative to 3dfaces because they are limited to 3 or 4 vertices and are not valid objects for PROJECTGEOMETRY. I also find it to be tricky hiding edges in that one must enter 'i' at the start and end of each edge to be hidden or the 3dface needs to drawn again. Is it possibly a more modern approach to draw surfaces instead of 3dfaces?

Actually was looking at that page, but it seemed too involved for drawing simple plane surfaces.

Surface modeling is not too bad. I've taught several classes at AU on 3D modeling with AutoCAD. I touch on the basics of Solid, Surface and Mesh modeling.
