Start-up load takes forever

Our company just made a big leap from AutoCAD 2013 to AutoCAD 2018. Now when ever I open a drawing the drawing show on the screen and then the s::startup-load command pops up and it takes close to 10 seconds.  This is for every drawing I open.  With 2013 the drawings would open instantly. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

Hi,

welcome @Anonymous!

Did you migrate settings when you first started AutoCAD 2018? If so you might have imported some settings/apps/... not working well with AutoCAD 2018.

>> then the s::startup-load command pops up and it takes close to 10 seconds

Disconnect your workstation from all networks, disable antivirus software and now try again to start AutoCAD and to load a drawing.

"the s::startup-load command pops up"
I can wrong, but there is no s::startup functions defined in a standard vanilla installation.
So: Have you defined the function?
What is the content of that function?

So: Have you defined the function?
What is the content of that function? I am not sure. See below, does this qualify as defining a function. I did migrate settings from 13 when I installed 18.
I checked and the profile was not set to vanilla. When I switched it to vanilla the drawings seem to be opening normally but my ribbon was different.
The only thing I can think of that I customized would be a ribbon panel with 8 custom buttons I created. These did go away when I switched to the vanilla along with a couple of other panels. I did also changed some of the ACADM aliases but those seem to be working fine even though they don't show up in the PGP file when vanilla is current.

I did migrate settings from 13 but we have network licenses so I don't think I can disconnect and still open AutoCAD.

Hi,

>> I did migrate settings from 13

Then you might have transferred a tool/app/... which might fail on 2018.

>> When I switched it to vanilla the drawings seem to be opening normally

Again a proof that not standard AutoCAD makes it slow, it's one of your customizations

At least you have found an environment, that is clean, I would start now to copy that profile to make it my new working profile ... then add step-by-step the modifications you added and watch when the slow down starts.

>> some of the ACADM aliases but those seem to be working

Are you working with plain (Vanilla) AutoCAD or with AutoCAD Mechanical? ... as ACADM (for me) means AutoCAD Mechanical ...

Hi,

normaly there is no S::Startup in AutoCAD only in AutoCAD Mechanical etc.

Maybe it's defined in ACAD.LSP, ACADDOC.LSP or ACAD.MNL. Please check that.

When you find it please post the content here.

When you use only AutoCAD you can delete. Be carefully maybe there is a PlugIn which use that method.

Regards Jürgen

BTW: I never migrate AutoCAD. For me it doen't work correctly.

I hope my tip helps. If so then give me kudos and mark the tip as a solution.
Thanks.

Sorry I did not specify that it is Mechanical.  I may just reinstall without migrating and recreate the buttons.

thanks

Hi,

NO!!!

You don't need to uninstall the software! Reset settings to default should work in that case too >>>click<<<

I find it very frustrating that s::startup runs every time a drawing is opened.  I have to load several hundred Lisp files to enable me to run them on my drawings.  Previously (Acad2012) it seemed that it was only necessary to load the files (within s::startup) at the initial start up of AutoCAD (which was controlled by the 'lispinit' variable), however this now appears to have been discontinued and it takes about 5 minutes to load every time I open a drawing.  I'm probably wrong, but I believe that the lisp was previously loaded into the Acad 'Environment' but now into the Individual Drawing session itself.  I'm now no longer to loop into and out of drawings and run an automated program on each drawing (with no interaction from me) as I could do previously without getting the 'VL-NAMESPACE' error appearing.  I really hope I'm wrong, but if there are any suggestions I'd be very pleased to know them (within reason :))

Hi,

>>"I find it very frustrating that s::startup runs every time a drawing is opened"

It doesn't*

>>". I have to load several hundred Lisp files to enable me to run them on my drawings. "

Hundreds? Time to overthink your function&file library structure, but this is offtopic and your own choice.

>>"Previously (Acad2012) it seemed that it was only necessary to load the files (within s::startup) at the initial start up of AutoCAD"

No*, nothing changed.

>>"(which was controlled by the 'lispinit' variable)"

ahh.

Lispinit controles the lispsymbol keep-or-take-with from document to document while in SDI mode(1) !

SDI is special and not default, sinde R2000 MDI is default an usual.

* If SDI is on and Lispinit is set to 0, this is how the program works, today and in R2012 too.

>>"however this now appears to have been discontinued and it takes about 5 minutes to load every time I open a drawing."

while SDI and lispinit=0 and s::startup is defined, that's normal (if you are using simple load-statements).

! I can't say anything about the timing problem, but please tell us how long this takes for the first or second file, thank you.

>>"I'm probably wrong, but I believe that the lisp was previously loaded into the Acad 'Environment' "

No, Lisp is loaded into the document. If we talking about function from a vlx, you have more options,

but in this case YOU should know what you talking about.

>>"but now into the Individual Drawing session itself. "

While SDI and lispinit=0 it is enough to load them one time.

>>"I'm now no longer to loop into and out of drawings and run an automated program on each drawing (with no interaction from me) as I could do previously without getting the 'VL-NAMESPACE' error appearing."

It should be easy to find the first peace of the issue, while sitting in front of the system,

but it's hard to help from here without access.

>>"I really hope I'm wrong,"

Some rememberings, sure.

>>"but if there are any suggestions I'd be very pleased to know them (within reason :))"

_ _ _ _ _

Some ideas to start with searching, but I have to choose one of the ways:

1. You set LISPSYS to 0 ? If not, set it to 0 and restart Acad (which productname and Autocad-productversion in detail? See command ABOUT)

2. Just to make sure, please answer to: You are running SDI=1 and LISPINIT=0 ?

3. I don't want to talk so much about "before", I'd rather solve the problem first.

For all your tests, redefine or skip th eload*something part in your s::startup,

Start AutoCAD, load your Lisp files one time (all .lsp/.fas, or also .vlx files as I guess?)

and do whatever needed to test the issue now.

4. We are waiting for as much feedback as possible.

Can't thank you enough for the comprehensive reply, this has indeed been a triumphant moment for me.  It appears to be simply the SDI Mode setting that I'd overlooked.

I actually load 1022 Lisp files - have written routines for Intelligent P&IDs and Pipeline Alignment Sheet generation - seems crazy but it works and I don't have the hassle of recompiling a new VLX whenever I make a change.  Also find it so easy to track down my functions (all ascii) - I'm sure most would disagree but works for me.

Currently using "AutoCAD 2019 Version Q 104.0.0 AutoCAD 2020 1 2" (to me just 'AutoCAD 2019')

Tried (setvar "LISPSYS" 0) but that generated an error?

Setting SDI to 1 and LISPINIT to 0 has solved the issue (after many years of just accepting it) - Thanks again for the help.

Hi,

Glad to help.

>>"I actually load 1022 Lisp files"
Regardless of this insane number of files,
Have you ever heard of the AUTOLOAD Lisp function?
or the simple “load as needed” option
(or myfun (load "file1005.lsp"))
Still offtopic, but I wanted to give feedback because it seems logical to me that loading over 1000 files takes time.

>>" - have written routines for Intelligent P&IDs and Pipeline Alignment Sheet generation"
Wow, more application than some random tools.

>>" and I don't have the hassle of recompiling a new VLX whenever I make a change."
I didn't say to compile all in one .vlx, but bzw: Re-create a .vlx takes just seconds.

>>"Also find it so easy to track down my functions (all ascii) "
Your sourcecode .lsp files are still the source and still there, also if you are using a compile .vlx package.

>>"- I'm sure most would disagree but works for me."
I am sure most of people here never created a .vlx and didn't know about the details about it.
Also unnused of the most of us, the vlide Project utility. And the half only using the debug features.

>>"Currently using "AutoCAD 2019 Version Q 104.0.0 AutoCAD 2020 1 2" (to me just 'AutoCAD 2019')"
I understand NO word, lol.

"AutoCAD 2019 Version Q 104.0.0 AutoCAD 2020 1 2"
Doesn't make sense, or? LOL. For my interest, would you share a screenshot of ABOUT dialog, please.
Or tried you say: "The old one is ACAD2019, the new one is ACAD2020.1.2" ?

"AutoCAD 2019 Version"
okay

"Q 104.0.0"
This is AutoCAD2020, Productversion 2020.1.2
NOTE: In version 2020 was a bug around the SDI variable! And your system is not up2date, it doesn't have the SDI bugfix (Productversion 2020.1.3)
Install the latest update!
BTW: 2019 have the same bug, but for my knowledge, Adesk never published a bugfix for this version.

>>"Tried (setvar "LISPSYS" 0) but that generated an error?"
And by macro? by script? by hand? Just joking, I thought you are running a newer version - "Lispsys" only started from Version 2021.

Hi - ..I'll investigate the 'Load as Needed' as it sounds like exactly what's required, however it's no longer such a problem with the SDI working as it should.  Screenshot of the 'About' window attached..

Thanks again for all the help   All the Best
