SSM best practice for starting next phase

Hello! In the instance where you start the next phase of design (E.g. CD) but you still want to preserve your current phase (E.g. DD), what is the best way to duplicate your sheets and .dst file to a new location but keep all links from breaking (E.g. fields with #####)? I assume there should be an Autodesk tutorial on this but I'm not finding. Let me know if I did not explain this correctly. Thank you!

@Crass AutoCAD's SSM does not do "phases", unlike REVIT for example, so there is not going to be an Autodesk tutorial on the topic of doing that. Implementing VAULT to do "phases" is an option too.

You mention "keep links from breaking": does that mean you are literally copying DWG files and their folders to an all new location(s)?

Hi @pendean - Thank you for the response. Yes, currently at the end of the phase, we do an etransmit to have a zipped archive and then copy the entire sheets folder which includes the sheet files and .dst and rename the folder as the next phase submission. Various xrefs that feed into those sheets remain in a fixed location throughout the life of the project. Does that make sense?

But... I'm exploring alternatives to avoid issues. Thoughts?

We simply use a pdf to be a snapshot-in-time for various steps along the way.

Grant approval? PDF

DNR Submittal? PDF

State Review? PDF

Bid Set? PDF

For-Construction set? PDF

etc.

Once each milestone is reached, we move forward using the one set of cad files for the next step, and the next, and the next.

Then at the end of the project, we have one set of cad files on which we can do record drawings if need-be.

Hi @pkolarik - Thanks for your input. I don't think a pdf is enough in our case, but an etransmit at each phase for a "snapshot" works. In previous experiences our sheets remained in a fixed location which avoided this issue. Currently we duplicate the sheets folder at beginning of a new phase as I described above which creates this issue. Maybe we need to re-think our file structure if this is a limitation.

We copy the entire set of files and SSM to a xx% Sumittal folder as a snapshot in time and continue working in the  original files. No need to repath anything and nothing is lost.

Hi @neaton - That's what I've done previously as well. This discussion is making me realize that maybe we nee to go back to that. Thanks for your input.
