SpellCheck Archaic Word Removal

Hello all,

I realized the other day that there was an error in a standard detail of ours that spell check did not catch.

The word 'fro' is not seen as an error in spellcheck in CAD.

I've checked 10 users & computers, and it's not in any of our custom dictionaries, but in every one 'fro' is not an error word.

I don't know about you all, but I use 'back and forth' a heck of a lot more than 'to and fro' and I would very much like to remove this entry from the dictionary.

Is this possible?

Could it be fixed going forward? I know, when it comes to small bugs, AutoDesk listens to users about as well as Helen Keller listened to music, but do they even maintain the dictionaries or is it a 3rd party?

Thanks!

This appears to be a product defect since the word "fro" is not in the english dictionaries. You can "break in" to the dictionary by copying the enu.dct file from your SUPPORT folder to another location and renaming it with a "doc" extension. However - "fro" isn't in there.

Hey @natasha.l  - how can we escalate this?

Fro is a word. If it wasn't recognized as such, someone else would complain about it.

FRO, As in the sentence TO AND FRO, means... https://www.dictionary.com/browse/fro

Sounds like you need to use a grammar checker, not just a spell checker. Even those won't find every mistake though.

For large text passages, consider writing and editing in a text editor program with spelling and grammar checking capabilites and copy/paste to AutoCAD.

To respond to your inability to READ the actual question before answering, I'd rather have them flagged in CAD.

Actually, in my original post, I used 'fro' correctly in the exact same way you did. Glad you bothered read.

I ASKED how to REMOVE it

Warren was on the right track, and his response pointed to an attempt to find what I was after, and perhaps if you have anything to add on where ELSE AutoCAD is pulling word spelling lists from I'd love to hear about it.

There are only 1,024 entries in ENG.dct (insanely coincidental. 2^10 words?! exactly?!) which is approximately 0.5% of the English language, I just want to know where it's pulling the other 99.5%+... And if possible, remove some of the words that I do not wish to use, and the misuse of which I'd prefer to be reminded of.

I'd rather be reminded that grok isn't a common word, although I understand this fairly well. Or fix it when some fool adds 'irregardless' to the dictionary...

Thanks for your input.

When I first read your post in my email, I would thought you were responding to @pendean. When I saw that you were responding to @dbroad, I was shocked. It was probably a mistake on your part but considering the inflammatory nature of your post and the topic of this thread, you seem like the type of person who strives on accuracy. I'm guessing that I was wrong on that assumption. While those words might describe @pendean, this is not the place for them. This is a professional forum and deserves a certain amount of decorum.

Automation is a wonderful thing but relying on spell and grammar checks for technical documents is an exercise in futility, IMHO.

Good luck!

[See the >etiquette< ground rules.]

I agree it would be nice to be able to remove words, whose use in our work would almost certainly be in error even if they are  real words, "fro" the dictionary.  So if anyone finds the source of the rest of the words beyond the magic 2^10 mentioned, and knows of a way to work with it, I'd also be interested.

Funny reply @CovenStine : Something like this might be the answer, but it has its flaws and limitations https://www.maketecheasier.com/add-remove-words-dictionary-windows10/

@RobDraw @WarrenGeissler regardless of intent and replies, you can't remove words like FRO from AutoCAD since it only has the ability to add words, not take them out from the source dictionaries.

Microsoft has an "Exclusion list" for it's spell checking. It's too bad Autodesk does not have something similar. That would be a great solution all around.

Speaking of which - didn't there used to be an "Ideas" forum for AutoCAD?

Autodesk is not Microsoft (or Adobe or...).

They do not have an IDEAS forum for AutoCAD because unlike yours here most posts from most folks are solely based on their total lack of experience with the program.

Autodesk looks for all feedback here, do it often and convince others to join you in posting https://www.autodesk.com/company/contact-us/product-feedback
and of course here at AUGI, but you have to make the effort to 'sell it" to pick up votes https://www.augi.com/wish-list

Thanks Dean - forgot all about the feedback portal. Amazing what you forget when you leave the channel.
