Slow Processing of Files and Large File Size

Anonymous
Not applicable

We had switched to Autocad 2013/2014 couple of years ago and since then have noticed following issues:

1. Earlier commands like copy and paste were quick as in no processing time was there, but now it takes couple of seconds while we copy or paste the data in AutoCad.

2. The files size have increased . While earlier files used to be in kilobytes, now the files are in megabytes even if we save the files in lower versions (2007)

What could be the reasons for these/

we are using 3D based tools such as prosteel, advanced steel, inventor, cadison as well. Does this applications have any impact on the file size and processing.

Also files are made in different profiles, i.e Autocad & Autocad Mechanical. Could this be the reason for these issues?

I have attached two files which differs in file size and also processing time is different.

Hi,

For sure. The more applications are working on one drawing the more complex the drawing structure gets.

Also opening your file with AutoCAD brings up the message "DWG file was saved by an application that was not developed or licensed by Autodesk" ... so which other programs are you using to write dwg-files?

On my system: SHX are referenced, but not existing on my system, if that is the same on your system it might also be a reason for slow-downs.

The most critical part in your drawing is the number of DGN-linetypes, if you purge them your 10MB drawing can be reduced to a few kB-files.

Either use option "...purge orphaned data" in newer AutoCAD releases or use that DGN-HotFix: >>>click<<<

I opened your 10MB file, and simply purged all of the DWG linetype bloat and saved it, and the file size went down to 382k.

Get the patch installed on all your machines. Otherwise this garbage will continue to infect your DWGs when you copy+paste between them.

Do NOT accept any DWG files from outsiders without cleaning them first. It's just like stopping a medical virus.

More info on the DGN linetype data bloat can be found here: http://cadpanacea.com/wp/?p=512

Your NEW file is littered with DGN content, here is a summary from the free app I used to clean it up

DWG-PURGE Purge Started [Version: 6.0.0.0, AVappstore]
------------------------------------------
Items Purged | Purge Status
------------------------------------------
DGN Data................ | Purged : 165
Complex DGN Data........ | Purged : 211515
Blocks.................. | Purged : 0
Registry Applications... | Purged : 35
Annotation Scales....... | Purged : 16
Layers.................. | Purged : 0
Linetypes............... | Purged : 834
Dimension Styles........ | Purged : 0
Materials............... | Purged : 0
Mline Styles............ | Purged : 0
Text Styles............. | Purged : 66

You are copy/pasting from dgn-littered files, all need to be cleaned up first.

To add,

Try downloading and applying the Drawing Purge app

There has been a lot of great feedback on this thread. Post back if you have any other questions.

Thank you guys. Suggestions have been really helpfull.

I do have one query. If I use the commands such as DGNPurge on files with 3D data, such as those made in Advanced Steel or bentley, will there be any data loss, or it will be me as that with 2D file.

@Emmsleys

I tried purging with App. My file size increased from 10 MB to 15 MB instead using DWG-Batch Purge

By default: No.

Purge means only "remove what is defined but not needed" ... like a line-type that is defined within the drawing, but not any entity or layer has assigned that line-type.

In case you clean something that should then used later on then every good application will reload it without any issues.

Avoid 3rd party apps for now, and using the link I provided earlier, go grab the Autodesk patch that enables DGNPurge in your version (2014?). This patch also *prevents* this bloat from spreading from DWG to DWG via copy+paste.

I can assure you that the file size will decrease from 10MB to ±350k, by doing nothing more than purging the DGN linetype data bloat.

@Anonymous,

If you just apply the patch for 2014 (without the app downloaded) do you get the same result?

Actually, since  I have installed the third party app, the command DGNPURGE is also not showing any results. Same file if I open in Autocad 2016 and use Purge command, is cleaned up. What could be the reason?

I have already uninstalled the third party app.

From my understanding one of the reasons of Purge working in 2016 versus not working in a older release is that the DGNPURGE feature has been written into the application itself.

Working with files from AutoCAD LT 2013/2014 and then in AutoCAD LT 2016 will have different features. Most times files can be worked in both environments with no issue. But for AutoCAD LT 2016 DGNPURGE feature is actually built into application unlike AutoCAD LT 2013 /2014 (where updates and service packs are needed).

I hope I didn't confuse you, if you need more of explanation or need additional help on cleaning up your files let me know. 🙂

More specifically, there is no DGNPURGE command. They just added an option to the regular PURGE command, to purge "orphaned data".
