SLDPRT to autocad conversion problem

I've imported a part into Autocad 2017 student and want to do some modifications to it before 3D printing it.

I had to scale the part which seemed to work ok, but I tried to create a hole in the part by placing a 3d box then subtracting it. That doesn't work, it leaves behind remnants of the original part.

What do I do to make the imported part fully editable ?

Hi,

Use the command "XPLODE" on the part to make it editable.

XPLODE works to separate the parts, but 3d union won't put them back together.

I noticed that right after import if the first thing I try to do is subtract from it, Autocad thinks it's not a solid part.

Instead of using subtract, try drawing a rectangle using command " REC" of defined mesurement on the side where you want the hole and use the command "PRESSPULL" to remove the part and then delete the rectangle which would be no longer needed.

Do you mean use presspull to drag it through the part ?

Nah that doesn't either.

I think I need some way to turn the object into a 3d solid that Autocad understands.

The original part is in a downloadable zip file from here : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:336948/files

It contains the solidworks files. If you want to try it to see if you can work out how to covert the file, just click on "Thing files". This one is the Relaybox top.

WOW that screen cast thing is crazy. I love it. Is that for on this site only or is it a stand alone thing ?

I watched through the video but I'll have to study it tonight to see exactly what you've done and I'll get back to you.

Thanks for going to all that trouble for me.

I guess you didn't explode the block reference to convert to 3d solid.

Please use the command " XPLODE" at the start itself.

Oh crikey ! Yes I guess I missed that somehow, and it worked !

Perfect thanks.  I'll be able to continue my project now.

So how come presspull works but inserting a box then deleting it doesn't ?

Hi,

You could also use the SUBTRACT and it works the same. I guess you didn't XPLODE before starting to SUBTRACT, that's why you were not able to subtract.
