Sheet Set Name containing a period gets truncated at the period.

Hi all,

When I specify a new Sheet Set name containing a period (E.g., "ALBE-19.02 I and I Phase 3.dst") it gets truncated at the period (I.e., "ALBE-19.dst")  I've been putting up with this for a long time.

Today, I thought I should ask "Is this a common problem?" to confirm my suspicion.

(P.S.  Including "&" for "and" in the name, which I would prefer in the example above, will screw things up too in my experience.)

I can and have been able to use periods and ampersands in sheet sets names without problem in all versions.

Never had an issue with ampersand "&" that I can recall.

As far as using periods, I tell all our users NEVER to use a period, comma, quotations, etc anywhere near a CAD file, sheet set or otherwise.

Will they work? Maybe. I've seen many cases where they didn't, and it doesn't always manifest in a failure.

Ex: I have one project where any CAD file printed to PDF in any folder of the project creates a .pdf file.

It's an old project with a long file path, and special characters here and there in files or folders.

We should all know, anything that breaks is going to do it at the 11th hour in the middle of a rush submittal.

Don't take the chance.

Also don't forget file path lengths.

A combination of file path length and special characters can wreak havoc on a CAD file, whereas only one of those might possibly work.

Create standards and train users to not use special characters, and your CAD life will be much easier.

I can rename the Sheet Sets after their initial creation without issues.  It is when a Sheet Set is created and a period is in the name that the resulting new file name is truncated.

&s in sheet names will "disappear" as if they were substituted with a null (empty) string.  We have no problem here as we always avoid them; however, when outside consultants are responsible for other discipline sheets, they seem to love to use &s... and very long sheet names.  Both are problematic.  We add drawing layouts to our sheet set as placeholders so our project's Sheet List Table (Sheet Index),  which we are responsible for, includes all of the project sheets.  We've had to abbreviate their names and use unicode to produce the & while avoiding the disappearing trick it does.  It gets to be a real challenge when the name is really long.  I don't understand why Autodesk would put a relatively short limit on the allowed length of sheet names.

I hear ya. Not sure why the &s are problematic for some and not for others. I would suspect it is tied to file path length.

I do know that combinations of these things can cause some really bizarre behavior, especially with SSM.

SSM has a file path length if I remember correctly of 184 characters, not 256 like Windows. That also includes the layout name for some reason.

In SSM, one thing we do is never check the box to "Rename the layout to match sheet title".  We always leave our layouts named SHEET. Of course we only do 1 layout per drawing.
