Shapefile creation from AutoCAD

Good morning. I work entirely in the ESRI environment and am responsible for mapping wetlands for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. I do not have AutoCAD, but need to understand the export options available to the everyday AutoCAD user. I receive ground surveys containing wetland boundaries and I continually have issues working with .DWG files.

The first issue is the spatial information tag. It shows up as blank when I read the PROPERTIES of the .DWG file from within Arc Catalog and I have to ask the sender what coordinate system the data are in.

The second issue is the ESRI shapefile format. Can the average AutoCAD user export a .DWG file into the ESRI shapefile format? I have received a handful of files from AutoCAD users in the shapefile format and they import smoothly and I am wondering if I can simply request the files be sent in the shapefile file structure?

Is there a SAVE AS or an EXPORT AS option from within AutoCAD? Is it an add-on or extension to the software?

Thank you for you expertise and for lending an ear.

Calvin Lawrence

Re: your second issue: As far as I know, vanilla AutoCAD can not import or export ESRI SHP files.

You would need AutoCAD MAP or Civil 3D, or a 3rd party add-on such as http://dotsoft.com/mapworks.htm

OK. Thanks for the reply. I foresee this to be an ongoing issue.
