How do you get rid of this box, started when I updated to AutoCAD 2020.

disable system variable SELECTIONCYCLING.

It's a system variable, you can simply type it into the command-line, then <ENTER> then set it to 0.

Alternative methods are using the icon in the lower statusline or <CTRL><W>

why not start the command or set it by setvar?

Take a look in your very cheap help [F1] - CLICK - Selection Cycling (Status Bar Button)
