Select Similar not using currently selected objects - NOT a PICKFIRST problem

I can't seem to workout why select similar is not using my existing objects selected. It removes the selection and asks me to select objects again.

PICKFIRST is set to 1...

any ideas what else might cause this behaviour..

Cheers

Hi,

does that happen in every drawing with every type of object (so e.g. a new drawing based on an original AutoCAD template with 2 new lines on layer 0)?
Or does that only happen with a specific drawing/a specific object type ... then please upload the drawing.

I'm getting the same issue.  I swear it didn't always do this, or I would have likely noticed, but at present I have pickadd set to 2, pickfirst set to 1, and running the AECSELECTSIMILAR command deselects everything.  CTRL-SHIFT-A exhibits the same behavior, as does the right click menu because they both invoke that command.  .Selectsimilar works fine (but I'm guessing that maybe aecselectsimilar works with civil3d objects).  The same command in 2014 works as it should - automatically selects based on the current selection set.

Yeah exit drawing, close autocad, come back in and it works fine again.. Not sure what triggers it..

Pretty annoying. Tends to happen in old drawings for me..

I am having a similar issue, but I tried something.  This may help others that have a similar problem.

I was trying to select similar with a type of point and it would work with others but not these control points, turns out the layer that the block symbol was on was turned off and for whatever reason it would not allow me to select them while this layer was off.

I don't know if something similar was happening to you fellas but hey, hopefully I was able to help someone for a change.

I'm seeing this with 2017, It is EXTREMELY annoying.  I use this command all of the time....   Please let us know you anyone finds a work around or if AutoDesk Can patch this in an update....   I'm fine with changes but this seems to be more of a glitch...

Hi,

what should "SS" be? For me that is not a defined command and also not a predefined shortcut (in AutoCAD 2017, not with AutoCAD 2016, 2015, 2014).

For me that looks like it's your own customization, if you miss that in 2017 you'll have to recreate the customization as you did it in your previous release.

Hi,

>> You are correct.  That is my own alias.

Well, next we need to know which are the details of your alias?

Is it as LISP (which code?), is it stored as shortcut in the ACAD.PGP (how is it configured), is it ...?

Patch what? Update what? Never seen that either: what is SS calling exactly? Are you reporting that when you type SS it shows up twice at the commandline? It doesn't appear to affect whatever you are calling, is it? Are you typing SS or is that a trigger from a button? Are you using the mouse right-click as <enter>?

Explain, explain explain... No one can fix anything if we can't all replicate it and decide if it's an interference or just an annoyance 🙂

Rebooting CAD fixed it for me as well.

MEE, TOO. Glad its fairly easy to fix by rebooting. Extremely annoying when it falls out though.

As this is the top result for searching Select Similar problems, I just thought I might add.

It's worth checking that the layer your items are on is turned on, not frozen, not locked etc. This can be missed, especially in Civil3D if you are using a style that means the lines/objects display even with the layer turned off.

I felt a bit silly after trying PICKADD, closing and reopening, Auditing etc.... only to realise that the layer was off, and turning it on fixed the issue.

It's now 2025 and this is STILL happening. Any right click command requires objects to be reselected and confirmed. Extremely annoying!

Try setting your "qaflags" to 1, it worked for me. Make sure pickfirst is also 1
