Scaling

Sometimes I have drawings where I need to get dimensions to get a correct drawing. And usually there only outside dimensions, not inside. By that I mean general dimensions for a floor plan is normally what I get, not dimensions for the inside for rooms. How can I make sure I correctly scale the drawing so its correct? the whole scaling thing is a little confusing to me.

You need to know the length of one object or the dist between to points..

Floorplans have doors, standard doors have standard sizes,

or Walls, windows. That is not a CAD questions, it is your knowledge, find the right.

Then use command SCALE, reference

Pick Startpoint, use option Reference, Pick Startpoint again and the second point of current distance, after that type in your wanted distance value for this.

Hi,

>> By that I mean general dimensions for a floor plan is normally what I get, not dimensions for the inside for rooms.

Then you have to fix your rooms to get normal dimensions. please don't scale your plan drawings ever and never .

>> the whole scaling thing is a little confusing to me.

i suggest to use Reference object from scale command to control enough your issue . >> Click <<  just draw a line that you you want to take as a reference then scale all of your elements depending on that line .

I need to show scales on my drawings though, for example ones like this:

1/4" = 1'-0"

1/8" = 1'-0"

So how do I make sure my drawings have the right scale, with little to no dimensions given to me?

Hi,

>> So how do I make sure my drawings have the right scale

in AutoCAD ... we draw to 1:1 scale . the scale matter is a Plotting issue that you have previously prepared for it. you have to know the paper size and the final scale that you want to plot with . for that you have to fix all of your drafting problems and finish it then you can print out your guaranteed plan to any scale you need .

So What your saying is depending on the paper size, that depends the scale I need? so how do I figure out the scale with the paper size?

of course ... usually the Paper size that you want to put your final data on it will enforce you to select a proper scale and vice versa .

>>  how do I figure out the scale with the paper size?

it depends on from where you want to plot , is it from  Model space or Layout paper space ?

it's doable as the follow :

  • insert ( attache ) your title sheet in the layout paper space .
  • make a Viewport over your inserted title sheet and at the specify place .
  • now click inside the VP and zoom ( extents ) .
  • Now and since we don't know your plan size and paper sheet size specify your needed scale from  Zoom >> Scale command . >> Click <<
