Save a raster image in a DWG

Hi everyone. I am aware that embedding a JPG image into a DWG file can be done using the Paste Special command as it is instructed here:
How to save a raster image in a DWG file to eliminate the need for an external image file in AutoCAD
However, I find the end result to be quite frustrating. For example, embedding 3 Jpeg images with an overall size of 1MB into a 1Mb DWG results in a 6MB DWG file which is three times more than the size of the files combined. Also, adding a few images results in a quite unresponsive DWG file which can easily reach a hundred MB in size. Somehow it feels like the jpegs are converted to bmp when being imported to the drawing.
Embedding images into the drawing to prevent external references helps archiving much easier and it is necessary every now and then.  Is there something we can do to embed the image files in to the drawing without these unwanted consequences?
Thanks in Advance
