"Publish to PDF" in Sheet Set Manager, Autocad opens a new window cad file

When selecting "Publish to PDF" in Sheet Set Manager, Autocad (specifically I am working in Civil3D 2022) opens a new window cad file of each drawing as it is being published to PDF. In previous versions, this has not occurred, the manager ran in the background without opening any files.

Each of my projects is set up with typically three cad files that the sheet set manager references. One file with the title sheet and all detail sheets, a second file with the plan pages (site plans, grading plans, etc.), and a third with the road profiles. When plotting to PDF, as each page's PDF is being created, Autocad opens a new window of cad with that file, plots the PDFs that are in that file, then automatically closes that cad file. If I have the file open already when the sheet set manager is running, it does not open a new window when publishing each PDF. Note that my "plot and publish" options are already set to background plot for both plotting and publishing. I have not changed any settings for plotting from my previous versions of Civil3D.

I'm not sure if its related, but the new window of cad opens with the Layout Tools "Task Pane" window open. That window is not open typically in my day to day use of Civil3D.

Do you have background publishing turned on?
OR are you running in SDI mode by chance in C3D?

What is the DWG file extension associated with in Windows File Manager?

And is C3D fully updated?

FYI the C3D forum is over here https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/civil-3d/ct-p/4003

Yes, background publishing background publishing is turned on for both plotting and publishing.

SDI is set to 0

C3D is fully updated.

For your question, "What is the DWG file extension associated with in Windows File Manager?", I'm not sure I follow. Can you clarify?

turn off background publishing, see if that's an issue: we all use 2022s in our office but we are all now at the 2022.1.2 level of updated but none of us run C3D so I can't address it specifically.

That last one was just a hunch on my part, may not be a thing: See the topic
Set the Default Application to open DWG Files

Thank you for clarifying. The default application to open DWG files is correctly set per the provided link.

I also tried turning off background publishing. A new cad application still opens when publishing, but now as both a tab in the drawing i had open previously and also it tries to open it as a new window as well causing sheet set to crash I assume because it is trying to open the same file twice (once as a tab and a second as the new window). Also, the "Publish Job Progress" pop up opens and runs while the sheet set application is running. I assume this is the foreground method of plotting.

If resetting C3D is not an option
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/civil-3d/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Resol...
then consider asking your fellow C3D users in that forum if there is such an issue with their C3D2022 setups.

Thank you, yes, I posted over in that forum to see if anyone has had a similar issue.
