"i tried opening them with notepad and they all seem to be Chinese writing."

So your try to recover the files (on windows side) was not successful.

Thats really not an Acad issue,

You can only continue this fight outside of Autocad and test different programs for recovering.
How can such software destroy your computer and other external storage locations at the same time? Or did you only have two hard drives in the same computer?

Very annoying, but more like other programs testing is not possible.

The original file is infected with a ransomware virus (you have to pay to have it decrypted) and im not paying

i scanned my drive for recoverable files and it had found 80% of my files some being the BAK file

reading the internet it suggested opening the file with notepad and saving it as a DWG file which i have

But when i come to open them i get a  message invalid file type

and in notepad it all looks like Chinese writing

not like a standard BAK file

We really can't help you decide whether your work is worth paying a ransom for. I can tell you that it takes a great deal of time(weeks) to format and repair an entire computer system because, when I suspected last summer that my computer had been compromised, that is what I did with several of my computers.

Looking forward, I recommend:

  1. Image your system or create restore points regularly. (each time you install software or updates for example)
  2. Keep true copies of your data files offline or in the cloud.  Do this at least daily and don't use the same storage device every day.  Don't just rely on BAK files or application backup files because they don't contain up-to-date information.  Discipline yourself to backup your files to the cloud or to offline storage (external drives that are kept disconnected 99% of the time).  By keeping 3 to 5 copies of your data, it becomes less likely that ransomware will do much more than waste of few hours of your time.  I use Microsoft's Sync-Toy to back up my data. It synchronizes folders and gives you a list of changed files before acting so that if you sense that files you haven't worked on have been changed, then you skip the sync and recheck the health of your system.
  3. Budget enough to keep a second offline computer ready to run with all your data and applications.
  4. Keep your virus and firewalls up to date.
  5. Use sensible safeguards when surfing the net and when opening emails.  Keeping a separate virtual machine in which to open your emails and do surfing might be good protection.

Ouch

This has happened to quite other people, large companies whose data are worth many millions.
I do not want to know how much money goes to such blackmailers in a year, of course, the companies usually do not want to publish something like that.
A criminal mess, you have my sympathy.
