PNG Transparency

How do I get a plan from AutoCAD with png transparency?

You can create a high-quality, transparent .png, but as far as I know, not directly from AutoCAD.

First, print your file using the AutoCAD PDF driver, which creates a vector-based .pdf.

Then, open that .pdf with Photoshop or another similar photo editor and it will have no background.  You can save it as a .png and it shouldn't have any background between your linework.

Your PDF program may also be able to directly export a transparent .png from the .pdf file.

Work:  AutoCAD 2022.1.3, Windows 10 Pro v22H2 64-bit, Intel Core i7-8700K, 32GB RAM, Samsung 960 Pro SSD, AMD Radeon Pro WX 5100, 3 Dell Monitors (3840x2160)

That's what I'm currently doing, I'm looking for a way to directly export from AutoCAD.

I don't think it's natively possible.  As I'm sure you're also aware, PNGOUT is not high quality and it does not produce a transparent background.

I would look to see if there are any plugins available for AutoCAD that add this feature.

In your Application Window, Under PRINT, open MANAGE PLOTTERS. Use the "Add-a-plotter-wizard" and add a Raster Format. PNG will be there and you can create a .pc3 to use and edit settings at plot time.

OP is looking for a transparent .png, though.  When I followed those instructions, I got a white background, even with "Plot transparency" checked.  Am I missing another way to get the transparency out of this method?

Hello

For inserting Transparent PNG Images with ACAD 201X, please look at this beautiful Video of @O_Eckmann !

Patrice: that's the wrong direction. This thread is about exporting transparent .png's, not inserting them.

Hi,

With PDF Creator free, you can plot to PNG with specific profil to store PNG in 32bits with transparency.

In this case, when you plot from AutoCAD, white background is transparent.

Be carefull, this works only if option "Plot with transparency" is UNCHECKED in AutoCAD page setup, otherwise vector are convert into raster before transfer to plotter and white background stay white instead of transparent.

Here is a screencast to explain solution

Olivier:

I don't do it often enough to bother with installing another PDF program, but hopefully the OP will find it useful.  Nonetheless, it was informative to know there is another solution out there so thanks for sharing the video.

What are your settings, when you generate a Vector-PDF?
I don't get it out as vectors.
My settings are shown in the screenshot.
When I import the pdf file, i only can move complete vertical lines of the pdf including the white background. There is also a screenshot attached.
The "Print transparency" and the "Print object lineweights" options seems to have no effekt on my problem.

Tanks in advance!

Regards,

Jens

There are a few differences that could be affecting your outcome that I haven't tested.  First of all, you're using AutoCAD for Mac and I'm not sure what options you have available to you (or if they even make a difference) or if that driver produces PDFs differently.  The second is it looks like you have a 3D model and I'm not sure if AutoCAD does 3D vector PDFs.  Finally, the ability to adjust the vectors after the fact could be dependent on the PDF software you're using.

For what it's worth, here's my PDF Options configuration:

When render is complete save as 32 bits (24bits + Alpha) once render is inserted as into a drawing a png select back ground transparency on the Image Tab.

Go to export - Other formats and chose metafile (*.wmf). It will have no background.Capture2.PNG

This may have been something already brought up, so excuse me if I'm being repetitive.

I found that when saving a .JPEG image as a .PNG the transparency property (edited through Layer Management) and background toggle (edited through Misc Properties) made no difference. As in, the white background we are talking about kept displaying.

However, whenever I originally saved said image as a .PNG (instead of later changing it), then the transparency feature and background display became available. I'm constantly learning about different imagery files and their vector properties, but this seemed to fix the .PNGs coming in without the background toggle option working.

I'm using AutoCAD 2023. Inserting the .PNG through Xref Command.

Hopefully this can help someone in need!
