When an AutoCAD file contains one or more attached x-refs and 3D clipping is performed on these x-refs, the file can become very heavy, making it difficult to navigate and work within it.

Tried PURGE and OVERKILL ?
Then tried tiding up your xrefs references (XREF) ? Relevant depending on the files situation (number of xref, nested xrefs, etc)
Then tried AUDIT ?

Those above point can be a starting points for file's health.
As command applied to xrefs, these points can be relevant doing on each of the xrefs
