PDF's and jpeg's links showing frames but no images

Anonymous

I've been using autocad for about 15 years.

Sometimes updating things makes users less efficient.

So why exactly in are images not displaying as links in 2017 but pasting as screenshots works fine?

I've also had issues with pdfs not showing up as frame only.

Is there hidden DRM going on or what?

Please make autocad do simple things properly.

I don't really want to hear only pdf's above acrobat 7 are support either...

Everything should be backward compatible.

So you should know by now that preview images are not a window into the actual state of a file, but a display of a raster image embedded in the DWG take when the file was last save. Nothing has changed through R2017 with that reality.

Are these OLE attachments, or did you actually use IMAGEATTACH and PDFATTACH command to bring this content in?
Is there an error message or pop-up noting content is missing when you open this file?

Thanks for your comments but still not working.

I can paste images thats not the issue.

But when I link pdf, or jpeg and insert from tool bar they don't always display just a frame even if I pan and zoom.

The wording here is very poor but I think you are saying that images inserted as references are not displaying and instead show a file path. I'm assuming that with your vast experience, you have already verified it is not one of the frame variables. Most likely it is because AutoCAD cannot find the file at the specified path location. There are a number of reasons that can cause this to happen. I would suggest that you focus on those rather than blaming AutoCAD.

When it shows up as the frame only, is there a path and filename shown as text, inside the frame?

If you run the IMAGE command, is the status of the missing image listed as "Unreferenced"?

  • no pathname in frame and image is referenced
  • whats bizarre is you can see the image if you have autocad as a shortcut on the task bar as a small preview window but when you open it it's just a box that is referenced.

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm sorry that you are having this issue. Please do this for me. In a new folder, place an image and a PDF file. Then create a new drawing in the folder and attach the image and the PDF in the manner that you typically do. Save your file. Then zip up all three and attach the zip file to a post. I would like to take a look a this for you.

Please also tell me if the locatino of your attachments currently are on a local drive or on a network.

Hi @Anonymous,

I opened the drawing file and everything appeared normal. I suggest that you do a Reset Settings to Default to see if that corrects this issue.

That's the problem with brut force solutions. They have the potential to change a lot of stuff, even settings that you changed deliberately.

HI @Anonymous,

Sometimes some corruption happens especially during a crash. I am not sure what has caused it in your specific case.  I'm glad the Reset got you back to normal!

I just ran into the same problem - or at least, I'm having the same symptoms. I reset AutoCAD and when trying to do so, it told me I had insufficient storage space to do so. AutoCAD unloads all images when it's process reaches the limits of your computer storage, in my case that happened when I had twentysome gigabytes left on my computer.

So before resetting all your settings, check if your hard disk still has a lot of space or try to remove some things, that might work too.
