PASTESPEC failure

I used PASTESPEC to place several .jpg images into my drawing file.  Per the instructions for this command, I removed the .jpg files from the project folder.  After that, I have opened, worked on and closed the drawing file several times over a few days and the images remained as created.  This morning I opened the drawing and the images were gone.  Instead I get the attached.  Any ideas on what went wrong?

You'll need to put them back for now: it does not look like they embedded correctly?

Is this the process you followed exactly 100%

Thanks for helping me get this worked out.  Reattached the images using the prescribed procedure using Paint and attaching the meta file instead of the image file.  Emailed the drawing to a co-worker who opened it directly from the email and everything was there.  Considering problem solved for now.  Will post if anything else goes wrong.
