PaperSpace Dimensions wacky?

PaperSpace Dimensions wacky?

So I am stumped..

We sent a drawing file and when the user on the receiving end opened it... the Annotative Dimensions in PaperSpace / Layout Tab went wacky (see below images) as if there was another annotation scale somehow added to and controlling the dimensions other than 1=1. The Dimension Style was the OOTB Dimension Style "Annotative" using a DIMLFAC override of -64.9732 (odd Viewport Scale of 0.015391). But DIMLFAC only effects dimension measurements. The OOTB "Annotative" uses the "Annotative" text style and by default Annotation Scale of 1=1.

It is my experience that when Dimensions are done on a Layout Tab by default are done with a Annotative Scale of 1=1. The only way I know of adding another Annotative Scale to Layout Tab Annotative objects is through widget on the Properties Palette when such a Dimension(object) is selected. I found that I could replicate the below image by adding another scale rep other than 1=1 and then deleting the 1=1 representation through the widget on the properties palette (Annotation Object Scale accessible from the Properties Palette when the dimensions are selected.)

The receiver asked how they could fix this?

My thoughts are that the user could select the dimensions, add back in the 1=1 Representation and then delete the bad Annotation Scale through the Properties Palette Annotation Scale widget.

I am wondering how this happened?

I am wondering now if the receiver has a version of AutoCAD that doesn't support Annotative objects? ...

Thoughts?

Your dimstyle is not set for use in paperspace: look at your screenshot, "dimstyle "varies" is a red flag right there before you even go further.

Is this a file from outside your office? Or is this your first venture into dimensioning in AutoCAD? Post your DWG file here, let others touch it.

Apologies... that screen shot you referenced, I took from a trouble shooting session in a drawing I created from scratch, I had another dimstyle that I had used. I was attempting to replicate his issue.

The 2nd image in my post was taken by the receiver of OUR drawing file showing result on his end when they opened the drawing. When we open the drawing that we sent it is displaying exactly as it should.

(I've been doing AutoCAD since 1983'ish or so in DOS AutoCAD version 9.0 - before PaperSpace if I recall correctly)

Here is the corrected image:

Here is a copy of the drawing file that we sent... of course without border and xrefs... the layout tab has the dimensions in question.

Your take will be much appreciated.

You may find proxy objects in the drawing's database, but that should not trouble your investigation.

Also, there was a Dimstyle override on DIMLFAC... when the dimensions were done initially.

Side Note: I disagree with doing overrides, but that is how a third party software we use deals with dimensions in paperspace... the software allows you to use virtually any arbitrary scale on the viewport. The factor is pretty close to 3/16"=1'-0" but not quite.

Hi @mdhutchinson,

I took a quick look at your file and could not duplicate the issue.  Every dimension that I looked at only had one associative scale set (1:1).

Thanks for taking a look John!

This is an issue the receiver of our drawing file encountered. I was trying to replicate it on our end.

The only way I found to do this was to:

  1. Select the PaperSpace dimensions.
  2. In Properties Palette under Misc, click on the small control to the right of the Annotation Scale entry to bring up the Object Scale List dialog.
  3. Click the Add button and select 3/8"=1'-0" for instance.
  4. Then before clicking the OK button, select the 1'-0"=1'-0" and click the Delete button.
  5. Click the OK button to dismiss the dialog box.
  6. The 3/8"=1'-0" Annotation Scale Rep now controls the size of the Dimension Features.

This is the only way I found to duplicate what the user was seeing.

The reverse of this procedure is what I am thinking will fix their issue with our drawing file.

Just how this happened I have not been able to tell, except to do the above procedure.

Video conference with your file recipient and ask them to replicate it while you watch, then have them SAVE and send you that DWG file back.

It should be easy to figure out what they did wrong from one or both: you and us over here have no idea what they did it.

My gosh... that is a great idea!

And what is it you think of my hypothesis of how if might have happened - did you attempt to replicate it?

I am unable to replicate the issue, but I did not go down the rabbit hole you typed up to get there either, who'd do that deliberately :cara_con_una_leve_sonrisa:

Goes without saying I guess - precisely your point I presume.

I didn't spend much time at all trying to replicate it. Picked the dimension. The option is grayed out on the right-click menu.  Looked in Properties Palette - the control is there to add another Annotation Rep  - seems to be to be the only way.

No rabbit hole there.

It looks like there are multiple annotative scales associated with these dims.  System variable "SELECTIONANNODISPLAY" set to 0 will hide the other scales associated with the dim when selected. Perhaps this is what is happening.   See attached screenshots.
