Hi,

AutoCAD R12 is 22 years old and designed to run on Windows 3 (and I got it running on Windows 95 too), but that is far away from the current Windows releases.

If you really need it you might use a virtual pc solution (if there are any available for Windows 3 or at least with DOS as R12 was also available as plain DOS version).

Dear Alfred:

Please explain "far away from" the current Windows releases.

I mentioned Windows 7 (64-bit) in my inquiry.

Windows 7 (64-bit) is not a current Windows release. Windows 8 is, but I
didn't ask about current Windows releases.

It looks to me like you were motivated to answer, despite not knowing the
answer.

I used AutoCAD r 12 myself in 1994 for seven months, running on Windows 3.1
and Windows 95, so you aren't telling me anything I don't already know.

Sincerely,

Hi,

>> Please explain "far away from" the current Windows releases.

I meant: You want to run a 22 year old 16bit software on a current 64bit Windows release.

>> It looks to me like you were motivated to answer, despite not knowing the answer.

Correctly, I never tried that. And to be honest I see no real chance to get it running, even not in built in compatibility modes as in Windows7 as all drivers (especially the printer/plotter) are not any more compatible to 16bit now.

And I gave that answer because I wanted to give the suggestion to think about virtual system, that's the best chance I see.

>> so you aren't telling me anything I don't already know.

Curious now if anyone out in the www has R12 working on Windows 7 64bit and "tells you something you don't know". 😉

So I have a second machine, the same make and model as the first,
running a very similar OS: Windows 7 Ultimate - Service Pack 1
(32-bit).

The other software that I run on both the Windows 7 Home Premium
(64-bit) machine and the above-described one, seems to not
discriminate at all between them.

So AutoCAD r 12 being 16-bit, would likely run better on my 32-bit
machine, when/if I purchase this old release?

Or must it have a 16-bit OS only, in order to run?

I am sure that this is a much more commonplace question than you are
trying to characterize it. OS's are $ 300.00 brand-new, while
Autodesk has consistently priced the latest releases of its
full-capability AutoCAD product upwards of 5 X this figure. Or in the
1990's, wasn't it closer to $ 4,000.00??

So given those economic factors, I guess that it would be very common
to find users running older versions of AutoCAD with a new OS.

Especially since OS upgrades benefit the functionality of everything
else the user is running, while AutoCAD is highly specialized.

Sincerely,

If you can find R12 for sale, Autodesk stopped selling it years ago. I love to walk in my my local Ford dealership and order a new 1965 Mustang 2+2 like I had in 1973.

Please let me know how yours is running. I already made my decision to
purchase someone's Acad R 12 and it is on its way to me.

You're running your R 12 on a 32-bit operating system?

Did they make a copy of Disc 1 before they installed it? Or was it never installed? Have you installed a DOS emanulator to install?

I will be interested to know how this goes.

There are free 2D drafting programs (you might try Draftsight) for modern OS

or

very low cost (perhaps free for one year) 3D design tools (you might try Fusion 360 - check the Do I Qualify for free link) available in this century.

Dear JDMather:

So thus far, it turns out that the seller, who got $ 157. and change
including $ 12. and change for shipping, when I won the bid on eBay (I was
the only bidder) for $ 145.00.; is located in Brewer, Maine, and e-mailed
me a couple of days ago claiming he thought the AutoCAD R 12 stuff weighed
only twelve pounds, but instead it weighed twenty pounds, and could I
please voluntarily send him $ 10. more via PayPal, for the added shipping
he incurred to send it, but if not, he'll understand.

And I am thinking, SOFTWARE that weighs twenty pounds?? Or even two
pounds?? Let alone twelve pounds! Aren't software CD's like, a fraction
of an ounce, each??

So when this tracking number from UPS finally shows up, I will be very
interested to see what's inside. I am glad I kept the transaction entirely
within eBay, so I can return it and get my money refunded if it turns out
not to be AutoCAD R 12 as the picture in the ad showed, a bunch of discs
and an owner's manual that software typically comes with from the
publisher. I have a Windows 32-bit OS that I'm hoping will run the 16-bit
AutoCAD.

I used AutoCAD R 12 and R 13 day-in and day-out in my job for seven months
in 1995 and again R 14 for thirteen months straight in 1999 - 2000, but got
discouraged about engineering and worked non-engineering jobs for eight
years, then returned to the profession as a highway inspector for the past
seven construction seasons. Everyone hiring these days for
engineering-related (which the state engineer boards make a very careful
distinction between technician and engineering type work) drafters
want RECENT AutoCAD training. And I refuse to go into huge debt for
upwards of $ 700. per credit-hour taking a college course somewhere that
requires sitting in classrooms, for something that'll take two years or
more to show any possible results.

It's hands-on practice with AutoCAD I am seeking; and having the software
running I will be able hopefully to play around with it at will. Not
immediate drafting productivity.

Sincerely,

- Claymont, Delaware

AutoCAD from the last century has little resemblance to recent releases.

The 20lbs probably includes the old 386 it is installed on.  Smiley Wink

Following now the discussion there is one more thing that get's interesting now. First I thought you already had AutoCAD R12 on an old system and want to install int on another system (was a wrong assumption by myself). Now, knowing you bought it newly, have you verified that you get AutoCAD R12 for Windows? Because AutoCAD R12 was first available for DOS and the Windows-version was released later and I guess not sold that often compared to the DOS release.
