Hi,
AutoCAD R12 is 22 years old and designed to run on Windows 3 (and I got it running on Windows 95 too), but that is far away from the current Windows releases.
If you really need it you might use a virtual pc solution (if there are any available for Windows 3 or at least with DOS as R12 was also available as plain DOS version).

Hi,
>> Please explain "far away from" the current Windows releases.
I meant: You want to run a 22 year old 16bit software on a current 64bit Windows release.
>> It looks to me like you were motivated to answer, despite not knowing the answer.
Correctly, I never tried that. And to be honest I see no real chance to get it running, even not in built in compatibility modes as in Windows7 as all drivers (especially the printer/plotter) are not any more compatible to 16bit now.
And I gave that answer because I wanted to give the suggestion to think about virtual system, that's the best chance I see.
>> so you aren't telling me anything I don't already know.
Curious now if anyone out in the www has R12 working on Windows 7 64bit and "tells you something you don't know". 😉

So AutoCAD r 12 being 16-bit, would likely run better on my 32-bit
machine, when/if I purchase this old release?
If you can find R12 for sale, Autodesk stopped selling it years ago. I love to walk in my my local Ford dealership and order a new 1965 Mustang 2+2 like I had in 1973.
Did they make a copy of Disc 1 before they installed it? Or was it never installed? Have you installed a DOS emanulator to install?

I will be interested to know how this goes.
There are free 2D drafting programs (you might try Draftsight) for modern OS
or
very low cost (perhaps free for one year) 3D design tools (you might try Fusion 360 - check the Do I Qualify for free link) available in this century.
AutoCAD from the last century has little resemblance to recent releases.

The 20lbs probably includes the old 386 it is installed on.

Following now the discussion there is one more thing that get's interesting now. First I thought you already had AutoCAD R12 on an old system and want to install int on another system (was a wrong assumption by myself). Now, knowing you bought it newly, have you verified that you get AutoCAD R12 for Windows? Because AutoCAD R12 was first available for DOS and the Windows-version was released later and I guess not sold that often compared to the DOS release.
